The importance of acute vs chronic is helpful in making the diagnosis. Acute symptoms might be infectious, and treatment can be focused on that . Stop any non-prescribed nsaid's (aspiriin, advil, aleve, (naproxen) motrin, etc.) ; start an otc acid reducer (like Prilosec otc, Prevacid 24hr).
