Primatene Mist Medication
Guaifenesin: Yes. Primatene is an otc bronchodilator called ephedrine (ephedrine sulfate). Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps to thin and loosen secretions. Together, they can both help with some asthma, but they are not enough. You need a controller, or anti-inflammatory medication also. Some varieties of Guaifenesin come in combination with pseudoephedrine (ephedrine sulfate); don't take that version with primatene pills: both are stimulants. ...Read more
Primatene mist has been taken of the shelves. This was a medicine that worked for a lot of people without a perscription. Now im looking at $58 dolla?
Good riddance: Primatine was inhaled adrenaline. It worked fast, lasted about 15 seconds, and was very dangerous. The fact that you used it without problems simply means you won that game of "russian roulette". Treatment of asthma requires you treat the underlying problem. Primatine only covered up the symptoms, and not even very well. If it was developed today the fda would have shot it down immediately. ...Read more
Removed from market: There are currently no over the counter asthma inhalers in the us. The manufacturers of primatine are petitioning the fda to keep it available. No actions as of yet. Available prescription rescue inhalers more specific with fewer side effects. Recently a new otc inhaler has been released. It is called asthmanefrin. I recommend you speak with your physician before starting any medications. ...Read more
No: I am unfamiliar with a tablet form of primatene, only an inhalational form sold otc as a bronchodilator. Primatene is Epinephrine and has a heightened risk of causing significant patient harm when used in error. Although one of its side effects is anorexia (loss of appetite), management of obesity is not a labeled or unlabeled use of this drug. ...Read more

I used primeatene mist. Now ventolin. I'm now using the new med 3 to 4 times a day vs 1x a week before. Can the new med be causing more attacks?
Probably NOT: Primatene-mist is an Adrenalin (epinephrine) short-acting 'rescue' inhaler. Ventolin (albuterol) is another short-acting inhaler but is more selective on the bronchioles in the lungs. Most pulmonologists agree ventolin (albuterol) is a better medication for your asthma because of 'this selectivity'. So, now if you need ventolin more often , your asthma is 'out of control' --time to get help. ...Read more

How is OTC racepinefrin/asthmanefrin same basic medication as former avail epinefrin/primetine mist. How does the race added to standard inhaled epi ?
Racemization: The racemic or combination form of Epinephrine makes the product more stable and has a longer shelf life. The d-form has less side effect than the natural r-form in terms of rapid heart rate and increase in bp. The d-form has a lower side effect as mentioned but has a more sustained effect. The side effect precludes frequent use so need sustained effect, and the combo is more stable. ...Read more
Does using grapefruit oil, extract, mist,or spray topically on the body or inhaling it interact with ssri medication?
Probably transiently: The issue with grapefruit and other medications is that it competes for the same activating enzymes as the medication. Grapefruit inhibits the activating enzyme p450 thereby increasing the effect of any medications using that same enzyme such as certain types of ssri's. This effect is transient and limited to the amount of grapefruit taken in. In the case of topical and inhaled it's probably smal ...Read more
I'm 18 weeks pregnant. My doctor prescribed mist pot cit and amoxicillin for my UTI infection. Are these medications safe in pregnancy.?
Not sure about less?: If you are taking drugs for a chronic condition like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension , then this a difficult question. If you are concerned about how many pills you are taking in a day, maybe combinations or long acting drugs can reduce the number. Either way, this is to be discussed with your physician since these alternatives are not for everyone. Good luck. ...Read more
