Can you take prilosec and nexium (esomeprazole) together? Can i take zantac at night after taking prilosec in the afternoon?
Drug interactions: Prilosec is a brand of generic omeprazole. Nexium is a brand of generic esomeprazole, which is left mirror image of omeprazole. Therefore, you only take one, not both proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Zantac is brand of generic ranitidine, which is an H2 blocker, which isn't as powerful as PPI but can be used in conjunction w/PPI. I took a 40mg prilosec, prescribed, can I take a zantac (ranitidine)? I just started the script and I need instant relief
Not best choice: If you need instant relief you need to take something that will directly neutralize the stomach acidity, such as TUMS, (calcium carbonate) Rolaids, Mylanta etc. Prilosec(a PPI) and Zantac(H2 blocker) both act to cause the stomach to make less acid, but they don't immediately neutralize the acid already there. **PPI's like Prilosec can be "addicting" see:.. http://bit.ly/1HDj7EB ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Prilosec didn't work for me but Zantac (ranitidine) is helping why is that???? I thought Prilosec was supposed to be better
Not really...: Like with many medications that fall within the same class or category in terms of what illness they treat, there isn't necessarily a 'better', it's more about what's better for you. Different people respond differently, so all that matters is that it's working for you. Hope that helps! ...Read more

Gerd: These medications have differing mechanisms of action and usually it's not necessary to take them together although I don't think it is harmful to do so. Zantac (ranitidine) has a quicker onset of action and thus relieves heartburn quicker, but overall, taking prilosec daily is more effective for most patients but should there be breakthrough heartburn, taking a zantac (ranitidine) in addition for quick relief may help. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Depends: These medications are used down into infancy. The choice to use will be based on her weight. I would start with Zantac (ranitidine) first if she is able to swallow pills. I usually start with 75 mg at night. If she is very petite you may consider visiting with your MD for a prescription of the liquid version for a more accurate dose. You may also try TUMS or Mylanta for some temporary relief as well. ...Read more

Several meds: besides those two, there are at least 6 to 8 other medications which can be used for chronic acid problems. If you have given those medicines a try and they have been unsuccessful, I would return to your primary care doctor or gastroenterologist for any other evaluation which may be needed, and potentially for a prescription for a new medication. Is it recommended to take Prilosec in the morning and Zantac (ranitidine) at night for complete acid relief of GERD?
See your doctor.: If you are initially treating presumed acid reflux, Prilosec 20 mg once each morning about 20 minutes before eating any food is a good start. If it does not completely relieve your symptoms after two weeks, however, or if they recur after stopping the Prilosec, then I would seek out treatment long term through your family doctor. Anti-reflux measures are important too. Good luck. ...Read more
