I take Prilosec to prevent my acid reflux from occurring. I take 1 OTC version every other day. Is it dangerous to take for 1 yr? Other options?

Depends: There are a lot of serious side effects including osteoporosis, a higher risk for pneumonia and even food allergies, dementia etc but the incidence is not high. Every drug has a risk/benefit ratio. If your discomfort is severe enough, you may need the medication. Weight reduction, avoiding coffee, tea, alcohol, fatty, and spicy food may help. Discuss with doctor if still concerned. ...Read more

I get ulcers like once every 4 months. Is there anything wrong with me? What can I do besides take Prilosec and be good for a couple more months?

Strange: Your question makes no sense to me. How do you know you have ulcers? Did a doctor tell you that? How did he diagnose you? Furthermore, I've never heard of peptic ulcer disease in a 25 year-old, unless you are abusing NSAIDs. Who told you to take Prilosec? Do you know how this drug works or what the risks and potential benefits are of taking it? ...Read more

See an MD: I think it is reasonable to treat run-of-the-mill heartburn with something like OTC Prilosec to see if it helps. When it does not, the problem needs to be discussed with a physician to gain assurance that it is heartburn and not something more serious. ...Read more

Do I have to wait exactly 12 hrs to take my next dose of prilosec? I take 2 20 mg a day

Do I have to wait exactly 12 hrs to take my next dose of prilosec? I take 2 20 mg a day

Usually not exactly: Patients should try to take the pills 12 hours apart, but in real life, people probably take them 10-14 hours apart. If a patient's doctor feels taking the pills exactly 12 hours apart is very important for that particular patient, she can follow the doctor's recommendations and set her alarm for 12 hours apart. ...Read more

How much Nexium (esomeprazole) can I take in a day? How would you suggest I transition from Prilosec to Nexium (esomeprazole)?

No transition needed: Prilosec is the parent compound for Nexium (esomeprazole). If you tolerate one you will likely tolerate the other. Maximum dosing for Nexium (esomeprazole) is 40mg BID (e.g. one 40mg pill before breakfast and one 40mg pill before dinner). Lack of response to that dose obligates further evaluation--in other words, your problems may be due to oversecretion of acid or not entirely due to acid. ...Read more
