Possible: The inflammation of sle can affect the lining of many tissues. It is possible that one area is around lungs, another at the heart and another is among blood vessels. Sle patients are at higher risk for heart attacks than age matched people it would be wise to have your heart checked.

Thick mucous: Drink plenty of water if you can keep it down. Try Mucinex (guaifenesin) over the counter to thin the secretions. Try delsym for the cough. It is ok to swallow the mucous if you would prefer that to spitting it out. If it is colored see your doctor for an antibiotic. You could be getting a secondary infection. Good luck.
