My 9 month old baby has pneumonia and I have him on his prescription antibiotic. Can he also take a cough medicine?
Agree no meds: I completely agree with dr bergman. Please do not give any medications to your 9 month old. While it has been common practice in the past, and physicians often recommended drugs for cough and cold, recent studies have shown they do not help and may in fact cause harm. No child under 2 years old should take any cough/cold meds, including over the counter. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends: It depends on which cough medicine. If it is a prescription cough medicine... It may have Codeine and if you are using it daily... Then addiction could be a problem. Over-the-counter med: Cough & cold medicines are available over-the-counter w/o prescription in the States. Assuming that you're otherwise healthy & not taking any prescription medications, most cough meds should be fine for average citizen. Is smz-tmp 200-40/5 sus hi-t good to take for a bad cough? My daughter is 4yrs old and i need to know if i can use this as cough medicine?
No. : No. That medication is the antibiotic Bactrim and it is not used for cough. You should never give your child any prescription medications without discussing it with your child's doctor first, unless the doctor just gave you that medicine for the child's current illness. There really aren't any safe cough medicines available for babies, toddlers or young children. The best things you can give are a spoonful of honey to "coat the throat' (as long as the child is over 1 year old!), hot tea with honey and lemon, and lots of fluids. If your child is having any difficulty breathing, develops a fever, or seems to be getting worse instead of better, call your child's doctor. No cough medicine: The best medicine for cough is the medicine that treats the reason you are coughing. If your cough is due to asthma you need to treat asthma. If its due to reflux treat the reflux. If its due to pneumonia, bronchitis or sinusitis then treat the infection. I do not like treating symptoms unless i know the cause. If you have a persistent cough you need to see your doctor. ...Read more
