Prenatal Screening (Overview)

Prenatal screening is the group of procedures used in pregnancy to look for diseases and genetic mutations in the fetus (baby inside Mom). Screening is usually done as early as practical in the pregnancy. Methods include testing the pregnant woman's blood, scanning the fetus with ultrasound, sampling the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus, etc...

How often is prenatal screening wrong?

How often is prenatal screening wrong?

Often if quad screen: Maternal serum screening with three (triple test) or quad (four markers), when combined with ultrasound (integrated screen) will detect about 88% of fetuses with down syndrome--however, there are many false positives (abnormal when fetus is normal) and even more false negatives (normal screen when fetus has down syndrome or another chromosome aberration.

My prenatal screening results indicate I have afd. What does that mean?

My prenatal screening results indicate I have afd. What does that mean?

Afp: If you mean AFP, thrn low ago is associated with higher risk for Down syndrome. Your OB might do triple screening to confirm

What do you suggest if my prenatal screening results indicate at I have afd what is this?

? afd: Do you mean AFP? It can be elevated in neural tube defects (like spina bifida). Many factors can increase an AFP (like diabetes, race & weight). It's just a screening tool. It doesn't diagnose anything. Your OB will follow your pregnancy closely. I see healthy babies with mom's will elevated AFP all the time. Follow your OB's recommendations. He/she knows you and your baby. Best wishes.

Is it necessary to do prenatal screening tests?

Is it necessary to do prenatal screening tests?

Maybe not: Prenatal testing is usually for the parents, peace of mind and intervention. There are a growing number of conditions that intervention can improve outcomes. More often parents are challenged with the? Do I continue this preg? If you understand the risks and you know you would not terminate the preg, no matter what, you do not have to test.

If I won't have abortion, why should I do prenatal screening?

If I won't have abortion, why should I do prenatal screening?

Probably shouldn't: If you have strong and unchangeable objections to amniocentesis or pregnancy termination, then the information from a screen is of no benefit and you should refuse. It is a personal choice.

What to do if I forgot to schedule my first prenatal screening for down syndrome?

What to do if I forgot to schedule my first prenatal screening for down syndrome?

Depends: If the outcome is important to you schedule it now. If not, you are accepting the level of information women had in the 1960's.

I forgot to schedule my first prenatal screening for down syndrome, should I be concerned?

Some skip it: The information is available to you and for your peace of mind. Some don't care to know and avoid it. I find it helpful to most in doing life planning.

What is the mechanism for detecting heterozygotes or for prenatal screening for the disease?

Not clear: I'm not clear what disease you are asking about screening for. Please clarify and re-ask question.

Had prenatal screening done. Rubella came back at 1:16. What does that mean.

Had prenatal screening done. Rubella came back at 1:16. What does that mean.

Immune: When they tested your blood the could find the rubella antibody when they used 1 part blood with 16 parts of diluent. You are immune. This is good.

I had a prenatal screening for Down syndrome in my fetus and my results was 1:182. Does that mean my baby have ds. Plz help.

I had a prenatal screening for Down syndrome in my fetus and my results was 1:182. Does that mean my baby have ds. Plz help.

No: Prenatal screening for conditions such as Down syndrome are simply estimates of how likely it is (in this case, a 1 in 182 chance). The accuracy depends on which test was used, when it was performed, and as with all tests, there are false positives and false negatives. If you want to have a better idea, you may want to consider amniocentesis or CVS (chorionic villus sampling).

Can prenatal screening determine if a baby will eventually have amyotropic lateral sclerosis?

Can prenatal screening determine if a baby will eventually have amyotropic lateral sclerosis?

Yes, but. ..: Right now we know of about 10 genes that cause als, but there are probably more, because genetic testing finds a mutation in less than a third of ALS that runs in families (10% of als) and in even less when it comes out of the blue. Given a familial mutation, you can test before birth, but prenatal testing is especially complex and is best discussed with a clinical geneticist or genetic counselor.

When will there be a breakthrough in solving retinitis pigmentosa; is prenatal screening available?

When will there be a breakthrough in solving retinitis pigmentosa; is prenatal screening available?

No: Retinitis pigmentosa (rp) is a defect in the lining tissue under the retina called the retinal pigment epithelium (rpe).. Treatment options are still experimental involving stem cell implantation, or gene therapy but none of these treatments are available yet to the public. There is no prenatal screening available but genetic counselling may help in families with a strong family history.

Can prenatal screening tell you if your baby will have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?

Can prenatal screening tell you if your baby will have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?

Rarely: Rare families have a genetic form of ALS that involves the gene for superoxide dismutase or other genes. More commonly, ALS occurs sporadically in families with multiple gene and environmental factors and cannot be tested for in advance of symptoms.

If my rubella antibody titers were low during prenatal screening would they have told me?

If my rubella antibody titers were low during prenatal screening would they have told me?

Yes, however: The best way to find out is to call your doctor and ask. If you have had a regular immunization schedule, you should be immune. The CDC has recently changed guidelines for immunization with MMR due to resurgence of the disease due to a significant number of unvaccinated persons in the US population. You can review those guidelines by going to www. CDC. Gov.

Got prenatal screening report from 1st ultrasound & blood work. Hcg level says 24.8 kiu/l - what is that equivalent to in iu/l? Not sure what diff is?

Good level: It should be equal to 24, 800 iu/l, which should be high enough for an ultrasound to visualize an embryo. Call your doctor to set up an appt for care.

18/month son keeps getting cold, sinus infection, ear infection. Wife had negative prenatal screening and son had negative newborn screening. CF?

Doubt it: Young children frequently get colds, called upper respiratory infections (URI's), which often lead to ear infections. 3-4 ear infections per ear in the first few years may be considered average, with some children even more prone than others due to different exposures to germs like being in a daycare settings etc. While he should get better by age 3-4 yrs, make sure to get his hearing checked.

What is the risk of bladder infection detected on prenatal screen?

What is the risk of bladder infection detected on prenatal screen?

UTI and pregnancy: There is no direct risk between a pregnant women's bladder infection and her fetus: later in pregnancy, however, the UTI can stimulate uterine contractions, and there is a risk of the infection progressing/worsening eg into pyelonephritis ("kidney" infection) which can be further complicated by ureteral obstruction from the enlarging uterus and/or stone disease.

Examples are: colonoscopy for colon polyp or cancer; mammograms for breast lesions or cancer; psa a blood test that could indicate enlargement of cancerous prostate tissue; blood sugar or hemoglobin a! c for diabetes.
