Pregnant Or Constipated
When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
Often: While not everyone who is pregnant has constipation, it's very common. Progesterone, one of the primary hormones of pregnancy, causes your bowels to more more slowly, and that means that more water gets absorbed from your stool, thus making stool harder by the time it reaches your rectum. I like MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) or generic equivalent for prevention of constipation in pregnancy and when not pregnant. ...Read more
I am 9wks pregnant and constipated can you cause any harm to baby when forcing hard to go to bathroom?
Nope.: You probably cannot strain hard enough to increase the pressure so much in your abdominal space to harm a fetus. Don't worry. You may, however, be uncomfortable - fiber, water, stool softeners, and laxatives can all help - just check with your doctor or pharmacist to be sure they're safe in pregnancy! ...Read more
8w pregnant-never constipated. Had small amounts painless smelly yellow rectal mucus (1st time in life) for a week. Today lots of bloody mucus. Ideas?
Needs evaluation: Mucous and blood from the rectum is never normal. This is not likely to be related to being pregnant. I would schedule a visit with your primary care doctor or directly with a gastroenterologist to have this evaluated. There are several colon disorders that can cause this. ...Read more
Bladder problem?: When you say pressure down low, that makes me think you may have bladder issues. Your bladder is located just on top of your pubic bone. Otherwise, down low may be related to uterine sensations as well. Fibroids can cause pressure too. One cannot rule out intestinal issues as well. See a physician and they can perform an exam and rule out anything serious. ...Read more

Feeling crampy and uncomfortable with mirena (levonorgestrel) coil, not pregnant, but constipated every other day- any tips to help with pain and also constipation?
9 weeks pregnant and constipated. I drink water and gatorade. And Jane been eating bran cereal. Haven't had a normal bowel movement for about a week.
Include more fiber: In diet! Gatorade is mainly sugar, and not so great for electrolyte replacement. There is something with less sugar called Vitamin Water, but what is even safer is coconut water (fresh). That was used in WW2 to treat wounded soldiers IV! In any case, call your OB/GYN for further direction, and eat more cooked greens and veges. Better to use organic steel cut oats, than bran (GMO). ...Read more
Pregnant & totally constipated. Eating 20 grams or more of fiber a day & drinking water to counteract the constipation. It isn't working. Suggestions?
Miralax (polyethylene glycol): This is a very common problem in pregnancy. You are on the right track. Try some miralax (polyethylene glycol). Use a capful in a glass of water or juice everyday. It is not absorbed by the body but causes more liquid to come into the intestines. You may have to alter the amount you use each day. Make sure you check with your OB first to make sure they have no problem with you using this. ...Read more

Can do preg. Test: A urine pregnancy test done correctly will give a reliable result 3 weeks after sex (or when conception might have happened) or 1 week after missing a period. If done sooner, a positive result is likely real, but a negative result may be due to testing too soon, and therefore lead to a repeat test. If a woman has her normal regular period, then she is not pregnant, and the test is not needed yet. ...Read more
Pregnant and was constipated I had to use the restroom and when I did I started bleeding out my butt?
I am 9 weeks pregnant and extremely constipated. I have sharp pains and so much discomfort. What can I take to help?
Stool softeners: Stool softeners, such as Colace, (docusate sodium) are generally considered safe during pregnancy. It moistens the stool and makes it easier to pass. The iron in your prenatal vitamin may be contributing. Non-pharmacologic strategies include drinking lots of water, daily physical activity/walking, and more fiber in diet. Your doctor will need to suggest any stronger laxatives. Good wishes:) ...Read more

13 weeks pregnant, constipated and finally went to the bathroom but my stool had streaks of blood in it. Is this normal?
Probably: Straining and hard stool can cause little tears in your anus that bleed. Also, pregnancy can cause hemorrhoids, which can bleed during bowel movements. Have your doctor take a look at your next prenatal exam. If there is no visible explanation for the bleeding, then your doctor may want you to see a colorectal specialist. ...Read more
