When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
CBC test results: Elevated MCHC, elevated MCH, bottom of range for Haematocrit, everything else within normal ranges. What do these results mean?
Nothing: Your physician may want to repeat them. I trust you do not have spherocytosis or if you do, that you've been worked up. At most, a reticulocye count may be in order. Sometimes the machines can be a bit mis-calibrated. High MCHC is quite uncommon and if you feel well I wouldn't be troubled. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. ...Read more
I had blood fasting cortisol test come back double normal amount. 24 hr urine test is within normal range. Why would it be different?
24 hour -better test: The level of cortisol in the blood fluctuates during the course of the day and can spike from stress or pain (like getting your blood drawn), so a blood cortisol level tells us very little unless you are given a pill ahead of time to intentionally lower your cortisol and it stays high anyway. That is called a suppression test. We either use that or the 24 hour urine to screen for excess cortisol. ...Read more

My 24H urine cortisol test result shows free cortisol level as 5.44 ug/dl. Is this a normal level?
Not enough info: For a 24 hour urine free cortisol test, you want to know the total cortisol on 24 hours. It will be in mcg/24 hours. You are telling me the concentration without the volume of urine. It is the total cortisol that we need to know in 24 hrs. Also there are differences among lab assays and you generally need to follow the local labs referemce range. Typically if total is greater than 130 then high. ...Read more

Healthy young female. Two blood tests(normal check-up). Liver test showed elevated total protein and globulin. Other parameters absolutely normal. Why?
Platelets: MPV=mean platelet volume. This measure is of very little import clinically and abnormalities of this by themselves require no follow-up. Better indices of disease are the total count of platelets. Fasting plays no role in preparation for this test, nor usually for the CBC, or complete blood count. ...Read more
What are the normal values for serum insulin in glucose tolerance test (75g) after 60 and 120 minutes?
Serum insulin: levels are very unreliable and of almost no use in a GTT. The labs don't measure them accurately either. Insulin is supposed to increase during a GTT and will go up more if you are overweight and insulin resistant. There are so-called "normals" but they are inaccurate and worthless. ...Read more

Normal: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. My daughters sugar levelswere 8.1 and she went for a fasting glucose test the following day but I was told it will be following day results in but 2nd day still waiting is this normal or is something wrong. She is a bedwetter and overweight with asthma.?
Hemoglobin A1C: If the test you are referring to is your daughter's hemoglobin a1c level, then your daughter is part of the growing epidemic of children with diabetes. Her asthma may well be due to her obesity. First, you need the results of more tests, because one single test could have an erroneous result. Either way, if your daughter is overweight, the sooner you and she get educated about food the better. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
