How can autism be diagnosed while pregnancy?

How can autism be diagnosed while pregnancy?

Confusing question: Are you referring to mom or baby ? If baby, there are some emerging studies that have detected patterns of genetic code alterations in autistic kids who have an affected sibling. These small insertions or deletions of genetic code may be amenable to prenatal diagnosis in a few years but would not pick up every case.At this point we are unable to define who or why a kid will develop the pattern. ...Read more

Autism (Definition)

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting three areas: abnormal socialization, communication, and restricted interests with repetitive patterns of behavior. It is usually detected in the first two years of life. Cause is unknown but strong evidence points to an interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Patients with autism may display significant delays in certain developmental areas while having normal or superior strengths in other developmental or learning domains. The severity of the disorder is highly variable ...Read more

Can having too many ultrasounds during pregnancy be linked to autism?

Not that I know: I have not seen any research that shows a link between ultrasounds in pregnancy and autism. Ultrasound is a valuable tool to use in ob, (check dates, position of placenta, growth of baby), but sometimes it is overdone, because it is risk free, and parents like to see pictures, and drs. Like to 'make sure' they are not surprised. It's a wonderful tool, that sometimes is used to much imho. ...Read more

Is citalopram during pregnancy linked to autism in children?

Is citalopram during pregnancy linked to autism in children?

?: There seems to be major lawsuits against the maker of Celexa on-going (stating that citalopram use is associated with autism). Frankly, I am not sure how strong the causal link is (if any). I will be interested to see the studies behind this. ...Read more

Could drinking and smoking weed during pregnancy contribute to autism?

Could drinking and smoking weed during pregnancy contribute to autism?

Maybe: Some of the toxins you inhale with every cigarette will enter your blood and travel thru the umbilical cord to baby.It is well documented that the newborn of a marijuana smoker will have a smaller skull volume ; the question of related learning problems has been difficult to sort out. Reliable data based on single agent exposure is not readily available. ...Read more

Autism mild but...: A slight inreased risk of autism and autosomal dominant diaorders associated with older dads but a marked increased risk for trisomy because of maternal age. Are some antiepileptic medications known to cause birth defects or autism in a 22 week pregnancy?

Is there any correlation between the presence of a choroid plexus cyst at mid-pregnancy and autism?

Is there any correlation between the presence of a choroid plexus cyst at mid-pregnancy and autism?

Probably not: Choroid plexus cysts are identified with ultrasounds and reflect a disruption in in the formation of the organ that makes spinal fluid. There is a general observation that children with autism have an increased risk of all sorts of fetal abnormalities and birth complications, but the findings to date suggest that this is a correlation, not a cause of autism. ...Read more

Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more
