Prednisone Medrol Dose Pack
Rec'd Medrol dose pack for asthma flare-up yesterday. Doses (24mg max) seem lower than what I've taken before (40mg prednisone). Is Medrol dose pack sufficient for asthma flare? Traveling soon so want to be sure I get right treatment before leaving.
See below: Medrol is methylprednisolone, which is dosed different than prednisone. It should be sufficient to control an asthma flare. However, it depends on your other meds and how severe the flare is. I would make sure you are doing a peak flow meter daily. Also, have you noticed a decrease in the amount of rescue inhalers you are using since being on the medrol? ...Read more

Is it normal to have high amounts of energy and hunger while on a medrol (methylprednisolone) dose pack?
Yes: Absolutely. The medication has a variety of effects. Other people noticed increased alertness, even possibly irritability. In addition to having anti-inflammatory properties - which it looks like is the reason you're taking the medication - one of the other things this drug clas does is mimic and stimulate the body's fight or flight response. And that is consistent with what you're noticing now. ...Read more
Do you see less side effects with a 4mg Medrol (methylprednisolone) dose pack? I just started today and all the side effects seem scary.
Should be a reason.: As a rheumatologist, I have never prescribed a dose pack. Prefer sliding scale of presnisone, wh ich causes slightly less fluid retention. However, the "scary" side -effects listed are very unlikely by any stretch. I'm always concerned about the "bandaid" use of cortisone, but i can't be that negative, not knowing the reason it was given to you. I would not worry! ...Read more

I was prescribed a Medrol (methylprednisolone) dose pack I took the first three pills and then stopped it. And never finished it. Can I start were I stopped?
Yes, when starting: On starting the drug, a lot of what accounts for this effect is an increase in the number of *measured* white cells. I stress measured because there are a higher number of cells that enter into circulation - but not a higher number over - caused by the start of Medrol (methylprednisolone) and doses like it. That can sometimes lead to confusion - like believing there's an infection when one does not exist. ...Read more

Why does Medrol (methylprednisolone) dose pack cause me such bad pain. I am in so much pain I can hardly walk or stand? How do I get rid of the pain?
Not Medrol (methylprednisolone): That would relieve almost any pain for which it was prescribed. You should consult the provider who prescribed the dose pack as to whether you need to continue it in the setting of this pain. You should also not take aspirin while taking Medrol (methylprednisolone). Try some antacid for the pain (assuming it's abdominal) while consulting your doctor. ...Read more
