Prednisone For Bronchitis
Have pneumonia asthma bronchitis on prednisone 40mgx5 levoflaxcin500x7 is ok to take benedryl, cough supp and expectorant to manage severe coughing?
Probably OK but..: If your cough is caused by uncontrolled asthma, then you need to get the asthma under control instead of relying on cough medicine to relieve the symptoms. On the other hand, if your lung function is reasonably good and the cough is too bothersome, i see no harm in taking a cough suppressant for a few days. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor about these issues. ...Read more
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? Possibly: I am very concerned that you have been on prednisone for a year for asthma. That is not good at all. I think you need to step up your preventive asthma therapy, adding in other preventives to your inhaled steroid, among other things. See a specialist for this asap. Yes, the elevated BP may be steroid related. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I was prescribed Zpak, Prednisone, and Acetaminophen/Codeine syrup for Bronchitis. Should this be helpful?
Medications: The ZPak is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and Prednisone will treat inflammation, particularly if you had wheezing on exam. The cough syrup combined with Tylenol (acetaminophen) can help with fever and cough. I usually advise using Tylenol (acetaminophen) only for fever and a cough preparation only if you need it to sleep. Most bronchial infections though are viral and not treated with antibiotics. ...Read more
Albuterol: Albuterol is a type of beta-agonist. It acts by activating beta receptors in lungs which results in dilation and easier breathing. It can also speed up the heart rate because of its beta receptor effects. It has no steroidal activity. However, both bronchodilators and steroids are used in treatment of asthma. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

They may help...: Bronchitis is typically an acute inflammatory condition affecting the airway. This inflammation can lead to airway hyper-reactivity (increased coughing, wheezing, etc) especially in an asthmatic. Asthma controller inhalers may help to prevent "bronchitis" episodes.
