Does taking prednisone eye drops have the same side effects like po prednisone? (Weight gain, blood sugar increase, insomnia, and irritability.)

Not likely: Normal eyedrop doses would result in vanishingly small doses of prednisone absorbed into the blood stream. They are not the source of the side effects you describe. ...Read more

Prednisone (Definition)

Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

How long until prednisone leaves system and stops blood sugar rise?

Non-fasting blood sugar was 162. Had been on prednisone. Could high blood sugar make someone feel tired a lot? Am not diabetic (yet?)

Not the right test: You need to have blood glucose tested after an 8 hour fast. Alternatively you could get an A1c test and either would be more useful in deciding the diagnosis of diabetes. Your tiredness is more likely due to the issue for which you are taking prednisone. ...Read more

Not a diabetic, but blood sugar had been from 129 -218 since receiving double strength Decadron (dexamethasone) IM injection and 60mg Prednisone once daily for 2days.

Steroid diabetes: It is a common side effect of steroids to cause high glucose levels, If your doctor checks a A1c blood test and if it is elevated it would suggest underlying diabetes that is worsened with the steroids. If the A1c is ...Read more

I take prednisone 40mg daily for asthma flair up. I took my blood sugar 20-30 min after eating cookies and popcorn it was 208. Should I worry?

High Blood Sugar: Worry is not a productive emotion. But 208 is a very high blood sugar. Prednisone definitely will cause elevations of blood sugar, but you need to be evaluated. Having your height and weight would be useful also to estimate your diabetes risk. I would eliminate all sweets and recheck blood sugar. Don't forget to use exercise to lower blood sugar when your breathing is better. ...Read more

Why does prednisone and steroid shots for allergies make me so sleepy? My blood sugar and vitals are all normal. I just wondered why the odd reaction.

Why does prednisone and steroid shots for allergies make me so sleepy? My blood sugar and vitals are all normal. I just wondered why the odd reaction.

Unusual: HIgh dose of steroid often stimulates instead of sedating people. In fact, I usually warn the patient about potential insomnia on the day when steroid is given or started. Occasionally, this may cause low serum potassium level which may lead to weakness and possibly even cardiac effect. However everyone is different and I am no longer surprised from paradoxical responses in some people. ...Read more

Fluctuating glucose: Patients with fluctuating blood sugar levels often have fluctuations in vision. It could be simply that, something like latent hyperopia and need for glasses, or something more serious. You need a good eye exam to diagnose. Diabetics need to be seen annually at the least. ...Read more

What should my blood glucose/ blood sugar be at?

70-99mg/dl fasting: Normal blood sugars are between 70-100mg/dl when you are in a fasting state (at least 8hrs). Diabetes is present when the number hits 126mg/dl in the fasting state. When the sugars fall in between these ranges (100-125), this would be considered impaired fasting glucose or pre-diabetes (borderline diabetes). ...Read more

Your blood: Sugar depends upon thousands of things, most of which you cannot control. You can, however, control diet, exercise, risk factors, medication, monitoring, glucose control etc. Smoking is one of those thing you an also control. It's not up to me to tell you how much you can get away with before you have trouble, because it's impossible to state with certainty. Your choice. I can't give permission. ...Read more
