Different doses of prednisone for 1yr. Now on 40mg-asthma, respiratory infection. taking symbicort, (budesonide and formoterol) nebulizer, rescue inhaler.BP is high. is it meds?
Possibly: I am very concerned that you have been on prednisone for a year for asthma. That is not good at all. I think you need to step up your preventive asthma therapy, adding in other preventives to your inhaled steroid, among other things. See a specialist for this asap. Yes, the elevated BP may be steroid related. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

? reflux: Often an under recognized cause of cough is GERD: gastroesophageal reflux disease. Stomach contents reflux up the esophagus and can irritate the throat, stimulating cough. OTC Pepcid works for this. Most often, a prolonged cough is multifactorial so the inhaler may be helping. Other strategies that often work are saline nasal washes, and steroid nasal spray. Consider seeing a Cough specialist! ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Have pneumonia asthma bronchitis on prednisone 40mgx5 levoflaxcin500x7 is ok to take benedryl, cough supp and expectorant to manage severe coughing?
Probably OK but..: If your cough is caused by uncontrolled asthma, then you need to get the asthma under control instead of relying on cough medicine to relieve the symptoms. On the other hand, if your lung function is reasonably good and the cough is too bothersome, i see no harm in taking a cough suppressant for a few days. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor about these issues. ...Read more
I was prescribed Zpak, Prednisone, and Acetaminophen/Codeine syrup for Bronchitis. Should this be helpful?
Medications: The ZPak is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and Prednisone will treat inflammation, particularly if you had wheezing on exam. The cough syrup combined with Tylenol (acetaminophen) can help with fever and cough. I usually advise using Tylenol (acetaminophen) only for fever and a cough preparation only if you need it to sleep. Most bronchial infections though are viral and not treated with antibiotics. ...Read more

Yes: It is frequently used to get an active flare of the disease under control, to get the person feeling better. It is not desirable to use prednisone, though, for long term control of the disease, due to its many side effects. Other medications are used for ongoing control to reduce flares and need for prednisone. ...Read more
No prednisone: In general, Prednisone should not be prescribed for shingles. Doc is treating me for strep. Pneumonia. Gave me z pack and steroid shot. I take inderal. Zoloft. Wellbutrin (bupropion). An synthroid. Can I take albuterol ?
Yes: Albuterol as an inhaled medicine in minimally absorbed unless using large amounts. In any case its main side effect would be palpitations, although in asthma, Inderal (propranolol) may promote bronchoconstriction, which the albuterol is targeted to treat. This is less of an issue in patients with fixed airway obstruction ( copd) so you should discuss with your doctor what role each of the medications is playing. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Doubtful: The "active" ingredient in Mucinex (guaifenesin) is guaiafenisin. It has been hawked by drug huxters as an expectorant for for over 50 years-- something wonderful for loosening up phlegm so you can cough it up from your congested lungs. When the AMA Drug Evaluations was published in 1980, pharm companies were aghast, because it evaluated which drugs worked best. This one was "at least as good as a placebo". ...Read more
