Yes: This is a very typical Prednisone taper. I use a course very similar to this. Feel better! Of course, if you do not improve, please be sure to return to be re-evaluated, as pneumonia can always set in, despite the best care.

Prednisone (Definition)

Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

Pros & cons of prednisone for bronchitis? (i have asthma)

Pros & cons of prednisone for bronchitis? (i have asthma)

Quick relief: Without steroids, it will take longer to recover, steroids are not always needed. Cons of a short course are limited but include insomnia and increased blood sugar. Long term use is more likely to cause problems.

Should prednisone always work on someone with acute bronchitis?

Should prednisone always work on someone with acute bronchitis?

Caution: Steroids are effective medications at indiscriminately reducing inflammation. However, they have a number of potential side effects such as elevation of blood pressure/blood sugar, temporary emotional changes, gastritis and idiopathic bone necrosis. Additionally they actually suppress the natural immune system. Antibiotics, fluids, mucus thinners usually suffice unless severe airway swelling.

Had two 5 day bursts of Prednisone, 40mgs daily, only 5 wks apart, both times for bronchitis. Will my adrenals crash, since these bursts were close?

Prednisone: Depends on your general health: You should be ok, but be sure to follow your MD's directions & let us know if you have any withdrawal symptoms: (weakness, fatigue, decreased appetite, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain) can mimic many other medical problems

I was prescribed Zpak, Prednisone, and Acetaminophen/Codeine syrup for Bronchitis. Should this be helpful?

I was prescribed Zpak, Prednisone, and Acetaminophen/Codeine syrup for Bronchitis. Should this be helpful?

Medications: The ZPak is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and Prednisone will treat inflammation, particularly if you had wheezing on exam. The cough syrup combined with Tylenol (acetaminophen) can help with fever and cough. I usually advise using Tylenol (acetaminophen) only for fever and a cough preparation only if you need it to sleep. Most bronchial infections though are viral and not treated with antibiotics.

Had bronchitis since b4 thanksgiving still have it after 2 rounds of Zithromax and prednisone starting to believe it's something else is this normal?

Had bronchitis since b4 thanksgiving still have it after 2 rounds of Zithromax and prednisone starting to believe it's something else is this normal?

I agree: It is possible that you have had multiple consecutive viral infections in which case zithromax will have no effect whatsoever on the infection. If it is viral bronchitis however, prednisone usually provides some relief. Perhaps you have the cough due to allergies, undiagnosed asthma or acid reflux. I would see your PCP for work up.

Off prednisone for over 2 weeks and still having bad withdrawals. Was only on it for a week to treat bronchitis symptoms. How long to sleep well again?

Something else: I don't think what you're experiencing has anything to do with the short course of prednisone. Consider looking in other areas to find the cause. Hope this helps!

Prednisone: Can cause a lot of side effects, especially at higher doses. For some, 60 mg at one time can cause feelings of nervousness, mood swings, insomnia etc, as well as elevations in blood sugar and blood pressure. If you are experiencing these, you could try splitting the dose in half and take it twice per day, or if that is still causing side effects, you may need to take a lower dose. Talk to your Dr.

My doctor prescribed prednisone to me for my bronchitis. What does it do specifically to aid in getting over the bronchitis?

My doctor prescribed prednisone to me for my bronchitis. What does it do specifically to aid in getting over the bronchitis?

Fights inflammation: Prednisone is a strong anti-inflammatory medication. Perhaps you have had some narrowing of your bronchial tubes - and maybe some wheezing. Prednisone may help these symptoms. Prednisone is usually taken for a brief period of time, though. Taking it for long periods may increase your risk for diabetes, obesity, and bone thinning. But taken for a brief period may help your symptoms greatly.

On prednisone for bronchitis. Wont be doing any smoking but marijuana itself will not have any negative affects on my medication? Say edibles?

Maybe: Mj can modulate immune system adversely and cause arterial constriction, worse if inhaled, but still present to a lesser degree ingested. Best to avoid entirely. And get help for your cannabis addiction.

I have med anxiety. I just took prednisone for bronchitis (have taken b4 with no prob) but now I'm worried. Is it likely to cause an adverse reaction?

Anxiety: Many people have anxiety about medications, even ones they have previously taken. You are correct in your labeling the issue is not the medication. Many people take. The problem is your anxiety. Use ccognitive behavioral skills to fight it. Get assistance if you need to because your health is at stake.

I was diagnosed with acute bronchitis and I'm on day 4 on z-pak and prednisone. Coughing and mucus haven't improved much. What can I do at this point?

Wait: It can take as long as 8 weeks to completely get over a viral bronchitis though usually you will see improvement in a week or two. As long as you are not getting worse just wait.

I just started 20mg prednisone tonight for bronchitis. I took it at 8pm & its now 1:40am. I'm having hot flashes & I'm only 19. How do I control this side effect? I don't like it, but I can't breathe.

Drug reaction: 20-40% of persons who take Prednisone have an adverse reaction to it. This will subside tonight, but you need to call your doctor in the am and clearly tell him/her about this. Do not keep taking it unless absolutely necessary. Side effects could get worse and result in tragedy. There are ways around these effects, but you and your doctor need specialist consultation. Now.

Is it normal to have increased sciatica pain after starting a round of prednisone for bronchitis? The pain seems to be nerve pain.

Is it normal to have increased sciatica pain after starting a round of prednisone for bronchitis? The pain seems to be nerve pain.

No: Likely you have something going on in your spine that is unrelated to the prednisone usage. You could have been coughing with bronchitis? If so, coughing is known to cause a herniated disk resulting in the sciatica.
