Does oral Prednisone reduce itching? Or just inflammation? Prescribed Prednisone for contact dermatitis on face. Took pill 2 hrs ago, still itchy.
28 M Ontario CA: Does oral prednisone reduce itching? Or just inflammation? Prescribed for contact dermatitis on face. Took pill 2 hr ago, still itch.
This depends a bit on how old the dermatitis is. The earlier it is treated the sooner it reduces inflammation and then itching. But most reduces inflammation. 2 hours ago? Don't expect miracles. I also give low potentcy steroid cream on face. ...Read more
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more
I've got awful hives and was prescribed prednisone today to help with itching and swelling. So far it hasn't helped - how long does it take to work?
Depends: On the hives, prednisone dose, other medications you are on, the cause for the hives, if any. Kindly see your doctor and consider referral to a dermatologist or an allergist, meanwhile, unless contraindicated, you can take OTC antihistamines, preferably the newer ones, as cetirizine or loratadine, twice a day, which is double the recommended dose, till you see your doctor/specialist, best wishes ...Read more
I given amoxicillin when my mono was misdiagnosed as strep. I now have a full body and extremely itchy rash. I am on prednisone. Relief from itching?
Common: This is a common problem when amoxicillin is prescribed for a viral infection especially mono. You may try topical agents such as Gold Bond anti-itch or TriCalm. Antihistamine does not work well in this condition but if the problem is severe, your doctor may consider putting you on a short course of prednisone. ...Read more
I itch all over including face, head, and body! I was taking prednisone for it and it stopped. Now I'm itching again. What could it be? And why?
I had a severe reaction to my skin burnt all over, spots and itching after taking 4 days worth of prednisone (200mg) I havnt taken them in a week and my skin is still sensitive (looks nearly normal) but I can not sit in the sun and it doesn't feel right.
I had a bad dermatitis issue & took prednisone for 7 days & fluconazole for 14 days. Now I have severe vaginal itching. What should I do?
Horrible itching with no rash. Prednisone makes it stop not antihistamine. Blood work shows nothing. 5 weeks now. What is it and how stop itching?
"i have a rash and it will not stop itching I went to the e.r last night and they prescribed me prednisone and told me to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) I am 20 weeks?
See derm: Pregnancy alone can be associated with skin rash sometimes severe. A short-course of prednisone is the usual treatment. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) does help by making you a little drowsy and probably not from its antihistamine effect. If the problem continues, consult a dermatologist. ...Read more
I have a rash and it will not stop itching I went to the e.r last night and they prescribed me prednisone I am 20 weeks pregnant?
Did they say what the cause of the rash might be? It is always best to both treat the rash and the cause of the rash if known. Common rashes are due to sensitivities external or internal, scabies, drugs, and viral infections.
There are a few pregnancy specific itchy rashes however yours does not fit the timeline (PUPPP occurs usually around 36 weeks). Minimize soaps, eat healthy. ...Read more
My daughter has eczema and lately she has been getting a very bad rash. Red inflammation itching. Dr gave her prednisone last wk - any suggestions?
Sec infection?: Well there are two things that can go wrong with eczema- it can flare up. For that you need to look at the triggers and treat with steroid ointment. OR it can get secondarily infected by virus, bacteria OR fungus. In these cases steroid alone won't help. Seek help from your doctor ...Read more

If I'm taking prednisone and atarax for an allergic reaction in the form of a rash can I take NyQuil to help me sleep. The itching is so bad?
Nyquil: Nyquil is a cough medication that has several ingredients including an antihistamine. While I doubt that you'd have a serious interaction with the atarax, you wouldn't want the stimulant effect of the pse in Nyquil. Are you taking the full strength dose of atarax (50mgs)? If not try taking the 50 mgs at bedtime which may give you sedation for sleep as well as antiitch effect. Discuss with your MD. ...Read more

Sudden allergy to opiates after tkr. Never had before. Will I now not be able to take them again for pain? On prednisone to try to get rid of itch!
Yes. Don't take agai: If it was established by your physician that you had a true allergic reaction to an opiate, you should not take an opiate again; the severity of the next reaction is not predictable, and could be anything from mild to anaphylaxis. There are other analgesics available and alternate ways to treat moderate to severe pain. ...Read more

I have red patches all over my body they itch. I went to the hospital and the gave me benadryl, (diphenhydramine) prednisone, &cimetidine these medications did nothing!?
Foolish: ER people treat heart attacks, accidents, emergencies. That's why we call it the emergency room. They are poor at treating "red patches all over". What did they call it? Stop this foolishness and see a dermatologist. When you call, indicate if it is urgent. Is your water safe yet? Do not take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) except bedtime. It is a sleeping pill. Cimetidine is for acid stomach, not for skin. You need a p ...Read more
I had an allergy to doxycycline 4 weeks ago I can't take benedryl and I took prednisone for 12 days and I still itch, I have been taking ranitidine?
Cause?: I doubt that the allergy to doxycycline can linger on this long and thus your itching must be from something else. In the absence of skin rash, dry skin is the most common cause for itching. Have you tried applying a moisturizer on your body 2x daily with one <3 mins after bathing? ...Read more

Scared I had Scabies. Took lots Ivermectin. Derm gave Antihist/Prednisone for allergies. Still get random bumps/lines/crawly/slight itch. Masked Scabies?
Unlikely: What do you mean "for allergies"? I have seen many patients with your problem and usually have not been able to find a cause even after a skin biopsy. Prednisone should not be used for more than a couple of weeks. May try taking a non-sedating antihistamine every 6 hrs (higher than needed for hay fever). If still not helpful, see your derm again or consult an allergist. ...Read more
17 yr old daughter has mono and morbilliform rash. Amoxicillin ceased Wed. Prednisone and Benadbut spreading body rash & severe itch. No fever. Help?
Rash: Using amoxicillin with mono frequently causes an itchy uncomfortable rash. It lasts a while. The prednisone may not be the answer. I would use Zyrtec (cetirizine) and add Benedryl both if needed. Drink lots of fluids and rest. Bathe too. Mono can last 2-3, weeks and it is miserable. It is a lesson learned about over using antibiotics. Sorry you were the one to experience this. It will get better. ...Read more
