prednisone

Medication
Description
Conditions (16)
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect on minerals like potassium.

What does prednisone do?

Stress hormone

Hormones
Your body makes a stress hormone very similar to prednisone every day. A short course (5-7days) is often used to assist your hormone response as an anti-inflammatory to avoid prolonged symptoms. Prolonged use can suppress the immune system & should be avoided. Antihistamines can be beneficial if the issue is histamine based but will replicate all the benefits of the steroid.

Side-effect of prednisone?

Many.

Prednisone
Chronic high dose steroid adminstration is an animal model for accelerated again: osteoporosis, thin skin, loss or muscle on the extremities, weight gain on the middle, diabetes, ASHD, increased blood pressure, cataracts, thinning hair, etc. I believe they should be used only as low dose as possible for the shortest period possible. Streroids save many lives when used properly.

can prednisone cause ulcers?

Yes

Prednisone
Prednisone is a powerful anti inflammatory agent used for treatment of arthritis, COPD, asthma and other steroid responsive conditions. The risk for ulcers is higher for higher doses, prolonged use, or with prior history of ulcers. The risks for ulcers and other side effects must be balanced against the benefit of treatment. As a rule the lowest possible dose should be used for the least time.

Different people have different reactions to prednisone. Prednisone can make a person tired, fussy, excited, irritable, etc... However, many illnesses can make a person tired, so one cannot simply blame tiredness on the prednisone (the doctor can consider the various causes of the tiredness).
