See answer: Likely reflux and tan stools aren't related. Having tan stools occasionally can be normal. But if the change is persistent it can indicate a problem in the hepatobiliary system(liver, gallbladder and bile ducts) causing an obstruction to the flow of bile, and you should see a physician. See gastroenterology: Proton pump inhibitors do not stop working, but there may be other reasons for your heartburn to return. You should see a gastroenterologist for an upper endoscopy to rule other causes of heartburn, such as hiatal hernia, esophageal spasm or achalasia, gastric ulcer, esophagitis, gastritis. Efficacy: Studies show that all of the PPIs have similar efficacy, however, side effects are variable. You can switch to another PPI, such as Nexium (esomeprazole) and not necessarily have the same side effects. Talk with your prescribing physician. Have you been tested for H. Pylori? Take in am: Generally I instruct patients to take PPIs in the morning. If it is extended release or powder form take it an hr before your meal. I do not know of any medications that cannot be taken with PPIs, however some medications may need to be monitored more carefully if you take them with PPIs. Your pharmacist can tell you if any of your meds may be affected - but the list is small. ...Read more
