10 hours post op, total thyroidectomy. Surgeon said was harder to remove than first thought due to hidden swelling. Normal to have lots of pain/stiff?

Normal?: No it is not "normal" but it does happen. I presume you are still in the hospital - if so you must ask your surgeon for medication to control your pain. Hope all goes well. ...Read more

I am 2 days post op after a total thyroidectomy. What can I do for shoulder and neck stiffness?

I am 2 days post op after a total thyroidectomy. What can I do for shoulder and neck stiffness?

Do not disturb: at only 2 days out, you certainly would not want to disturb anything. Best thing is just very gentle active stretching and possibly very gentle massage to the back of the neck but by no means around R over the incision site. This stiffness in all probability is secondary to the way you had to be positioned to get to the thyroid gland. ...Read more

Firm, non-tender, crescent-shaped lump above total thyroidectomy scar three weeks post-op. Would massage be of benefit, or should I give it time?

Scar tissue: After some types of surgery one may develop adhesions that are fibrous bands and I think that is what your surgeon was referring to. Also the surface of the skin may have a scar. His/her suggestion is well taken. Use a good hand lotion when massaging.Be gentle. ...Read more

Hyperthyroid 5 years with toxic nodule pre hemi thyroidectomy supressed TSH elevated T4 T3 (liothyronine) 10 days post op TSH supressed low T4 T3 (liothyronine) am i hyper or hypo?

Hyperthyroid 5 years with toxic nodule pre hemi thyroidectomy supressed TSH elevated T4 T3 (liothyronine) 10 days post op TSH supressed low T4 T3 (liothyronine) am i hyper or hypo?

Difficult to answer: Since you're on ptu (propylthiouracil) which inhibits thyroid function and hormone production. Would have to know when and how much ptu (propylthiouracil) you've been taking and serial lab values to determine the answer. If your TSH is still suppressed, you're probably still hyperthyroid, but more or longer therapy w/ptu (propylthiouracil) may help. Methimazole may be safer than put. Think about radio iodine therapy w/your doctor. ...Read more
