No restrictions: After the gallbladder is removed there is no need to avoid fatty foods. Prior to surgery, a patient with gallbladder problems should avoid fatty foods to avoid symptoms. A small percentage of patients will get post op urgency, which is an urgent need to have a bm about 30-45 minutes after meals. This will be self limited, or easily quelled with Imodium (loperamide) ad. Good luck. ...Read more

Depends: Immediately after surgery i find patients who eat greasy or fatty food have a lot of abdominal pain and cramping with diarrhea and urgent trips to the bathroom. It takes a while for the body to get used to not having a large input of bile with each meal to help digest the fat. While almost everyone goes back to eating a normal diet. I recommend my patients avoid high fat foods for the first 4 wk. ...Read more

No: Low fat diet can sometimes prevent the onset of symptoms of gallbladder disease, however once you've had symptoms you are very likely to have future attacks.
