Can dural puncture from spinal anesthetic for csection cause brain damage? Had the spinal headache for 2 weeks no blood patch. Symptoms were severe.

Can dural puncture from spinal anesthetic for csection cause brain damage? Had the spinal headache for 2 weeks no blood patch. Symptoms were severe.

Dural puncture: Dural puncture cannot cause any brain damage unless there is very high CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) pressure inside the skull (increased icp - intracranial pressure), in which case the skull contents can herniate outside the skull through the foramen magnum (through which the spinal cord exits). This would be an emergency and if you are writing this, you dont have it ! ...Read more

I had a spinal tap three days ago. I developed a spinal headache, a numb right leg, & a knot at the puncture site. What kind of a recovery time am i looking at?

Eternal: Go back and have the hole in your dura sealed back up with a blood patch! you're leaking spinal fluid where you had the lumbar puncture and it won't heal itself. The fastest way to take care of it is to have blood drawn, repeat the spinal tap, and inject those platelets into the canal to seal up the puncture where you're leaking. Your headache will be gone very soon thereafter. ...Read more

I had a lumbar puncture done in an ER...I am now having severe spinal headache, I cant even sit up at all!! I vomit and have to lay back down. HELP?

Post-LP headache: First thing, lay down. Don't get up. Second, hydrate - water/Gatorade/Powerade. And third, caffeine and ibuprofen (per instructions)! If not better in 72-96 hours post-LP, would contact provider who performed LP for possible epidural 'blood patch.' Most post-LP headaches resolve with the above instructions. Laying down is most important. ...Read more

Typically it is positional - worsens with sitting/ standing. Most of the headaches subside on their own, but beacuse it may take up to 10-14 days and in severe cases another injection is offered as a treatment, it is called 'blood patch'. ...Read more

After my spinal tap I had a headache upon standing for 3-4 days. It's beginning to subside. Is this typical of a spinal headache? Can I go for a run?

Wait: A headache following an LP is caused by intracranial hypotension and is usually temporary as seems to be your case since your headache is subsiding. But if you still have symptoms I would wait on running. Drink fluids, add NaCl tablets, caffeine, and bed rest until headache is gone. If symptoms persist, see your PCP for further evaluation and management. ...Read more
