Can dural puncture from spinal anesthetic for csection cause brain damage? Had the spinal headache for 2 weeks no blood patch. Symptoms were severe.
Dural puncture: Dural puncture cannot cause any brain damage unless there is very high CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) pressure inside the skull (increased icp - intracranial pressure), in which case the skull contents can herniate outside the skull through the foramen magnum (through which the spinal cord exits). This would be an emergency and if you are writing this, you dont have it ! ...Read more
Csf leak treatment had CT myleogram fibrin glue/blood patch instant relief. Then high pressure headache and diamox (acetazolamide). Csf headache back and painful.
Level?: Most frequent complication is spinal headache which can be treated with epidural blood patch. If the epidural placement is above lumbar level, although very low risk, spinal cord can be penetrated, which can cause neuro deficit. If epidural catheter placed and migrates to spinal space severe hypotension or complete spinal can occur and it can require control of the airway until spinal wears off. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Painless dent on scalp after minor trauma, getting sinus/skull xray, had nausea, sinusitis and postnasal drip. Could CSF leak cause the sinusitis?
Unlikely: depends on what you mean by sinusitis. Minor trauma is not likely to result in a CSF leak. If you have one-sided nasal drainage which is clear and salty tasting I recommend you see your doctor. There is a lab test for CSF fluid from the nose (beta-2-transferrin test) which is very accurate. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Days: Varies, but often can take a few days to completely go away. If the headaches are increasing or accompanied by other symptoms (stiffness, fever, neck pain, etc) you should see the physician that did the spinal sampling. It takes a bit of time to restore the volume of fluid drawn during that time headache (alone) are not uncommon. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
3 yrs post post. fossa tumor resection, complications included hydrocephalus, SAH, Tons. Herniation. Head still hurts when I cough, valsalva, etc. ???
Probably no issue: You have been through a lot, so not surprising that you would worry, BUT, even though a Valsalva may make head hurt, unlikely at this point, that you are in any danger. If you get dizzy, lose vision, or feel sick when you cough or strain, have an updated MRI just to be safe. ...Read more
What is cause of a severe positional headache light sensitivity stiffness in neck after microdiscectomy?Small hairline anyerusm on CT scan post op.
Have it checked out: You should have this evaluated. Sometimes, there is some cerebrospinal fluid that leaks from the linings over the spine. This can lead to the symptoms of spinal headache that you describe. Not sure if the aneurysm is related to this-particularly if you are talking about a brain aneurysm. ...Read more

No it isn't: Leave your spinal cord out of it. Brain and spinal cord are completely devoid of sensory apparatus in their own tissue. Pain sends a message to the brain of actual or potential tissue damage; the CNS gets such messages from everywhere but itself. Your neck is packed tightly with among other things bone, connective tissue & muscle. They are the most common sources of pain, NOT your spinal cord. ...Read more
Post LP Headache: Post lumbar puncture/spinal tap headaches last until the tiny hole in the dura seals. This can be years but is usually a day or 3. Typically, the cure is to lay flat for 24 hours to keep the pressure low and allow the tiny hole in the dura to heal which it almost always does. Lots of caffeine is helpful too. You may want to call your dr and ask about a blood patch. ...Read more
I did a brain CT & it showed a frontal CSF hygromas & frontal arachnoid cyst. How serious are these findings I'm suffering from confusion, headaches ?
Hygromas: Hygromas associated with confusion and headaches are usually caused by metabolic or toxic problems in the body. Trauma is less likely. Once the problem is corrected then the hygromas resolve spontaneously. Surgery to drain the hygromas is rare unless there is associated subdural bleeding due to a fall from the confusion or encephalopathy. Discuss these findings with a neurosurgeon. ...Read more
