Is benzoyl peroxide effective for acne my skin is oily I have few pimples but much of post acne hyper pigmentation red marks..
Yes: Otc benzoyl peroxide 2% or 5% costs $5-10. Be careful: it will bleach clothing, towels, bed sheets. It is irritating & drying near lips & eyelids. If you control acne, you will slowly recover more normal color. A dermatologist can help with prescriptions. If you get branded benzoyl peroxide (proactiv) you will pay 10x more for same thing. ...Read more
It is possible: Epiduo contains Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. Adapalene is a third generation retinoid and as such can cause some mild lightening of the skin. I have seen this more often with something like Retin-A bit it is also possible that Adapalene can cause the same effect. Discuss with your dermatologist. ...Read more
Different options: For over the counter methods try using products that have benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, alcohol, and acetone. For prescription treatments you may be prescribed antibiotics, retinoids or vitamin a derivatives, azelaic acid, oral contraceptives, or spironolactone. Always ask a dermatologist about the possible affects and the risks vs benefits of each treatment. Make sure it's best for you. ...Read more
No: Usually dark spots corrector is used on dark pigments seen on the hands as women age. Because it is formulated for the spots or lentigos on the hands I would not use it on the face. Acne has an antinflammatory component that aging spots do not have. To avoid possible scarring of the facial skin I would not recommend using it on the face. Follow label directions for safest use. ...Read more

Mild will fail: The red marks after acne lesions subside aren't treatable and you'll need to let them face on their own. Instead, focus on whatever it takes to keep your disease under control -- and if it's leaving red marks that stay around, you'll need strong stuff. If topical benzoyl peroxide as tolerated isn't clearing you in 2 weeks, you'll need prescription-strength from your physician. ...Read more
Hi, what is the most effective treatment to lighten Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation/ dark spots on face due to acne. Thanks?
Manage the acne: Depigmentation bleach creams like hydroquinone risk disfiguring you. At age 17, you have a duty to yourself to take charge of treating your acne. It's a chronic, non-lifeastyle-related disease that will remit on its own when it decides to, and that you should treat aggressively until then. If topical benzoyl peroxide has not cleared you in two weeks, you'll need your physician's prescription Rx ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Hi Doc! Whats a good facial cleanser to help remove red acne marks/ post infammatory hyperpigmentation marks. The marks have been a problem . Thanks?
Basically you can't: I'm sorry. These are going to need to resolve on their own. A hydroquinone bleach may help the brown spots, but nothing will help with the red spots. You're an adult now and I'm sorry that you acne wasn't managed aggressively when you were younger. Take charge of its care until it remits on its own. If benzoyl peroxide isn' enough, your physician can Rx stronger medicine. ...Read more
Terrible idea: This is a glucocorticoid and will give the bacteria that cause acne a growth advantage. This is one of the worst things you can do for acne. This is serious business, not something for home remedies using prescription-strength medications. Please get with a competent physician for guidance. ...Read more
Postinflammatory: Inflammation of the skin is often followed by darkening that may last for months. All acne can be managed today. If benzoyl peroxide (and/or the oral contraceptive pill for a female for whom it's right) doesn't work, topical Clindamycin or some other medicine from your physician will help. Don't try to treat the dark spot (not worth trouble/ risk) or even give it much thought (no face is perfect). ...Read more
