I was sitting with my back hunched forward and I felt a popping in the left side of my chest, near my heart, followed by a sharp pain. what happened?

Nerve: This appears to have been a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle that runs between two ribs. The popping feeling could have been from the ligament that holds the rib joint onto the sternum(breastbone). The sharp pain would be aggravated by a deep breath or cough. Shoulder is suspect: This problem sounds muskuloskeletal, which means it is either a joint (like shoulder), a tendon or bursae, or muscle or ligament. From description sounds like it is stemming from the shoulder joint and one of the attachments (muscle, tendon..). It is the only joint in the body that has full rotation, so it is quite complex. More likely muscle: Typically the sound is muscle sliding over a joint. It can pinch a nerve but more often catches tendon part.
