No: There should not be any pain your thoracic spine from a lumbar herniated disc.If you have degenerative changes at lumbar levels, you may have them at your thoracic as well. One caveat, and a very rare one, is if you had enough of a herniation in upper lumbar areas to damage the cord and cause a syrinx. Possibilities: In addition to pain management, especially if it's not helping, i would talk to your surgeon about getting new imaging. Yes: Thoracic spine areas will allow nerves to exit out of the spine and wrap around into the chest wall and abdomen. So herniated discs there can cause pain into these areas as well. Couple of things: Sounds as if either there's traction on the cord sometimes referred to as a tethered cord...or you may be experiencing a funny thing called Lhermitte's sign though your description's not classic.
