Being composed of Polymyxin B sulfate & trimethoprim sulfate, it should be used with caution in those with sulfa allergies. Does polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contain sulfa?

Does polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contain sulfa?

Sulfates not sulfa: Polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) contains sulfates. A patient history of allergic reaction to sulfa drugs should not exclude polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) as a treatment. There seems to be no correlation between trimethoprim sulfate and sulfa sensitivity. However, one can be allergic to anything. Check with your treating doctor. ...Read more

Baby started first dose of Polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) on Saturday night before bed. Next 4 will be given in the morning Sunday. Can she go to daycare Monday?

Probably so: Polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) is usually prescribed to be administered 4-6 times in a 24 hour period. If you administer a dose just prior to daycare on Monday, sufficient medication has likely been given to reduce transmission to others and minimize your baby's symptoms as long as the daycare can continue the schedule during your child's time with them. Check their policy. ...Read more

If I used polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) in eye last month and got pink eye again this month I used polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) again would that be considered prolonged use?

If I used polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) in eye last month and got pink eye again this month I used polytrim (polymyxin b and trimethoprim) again would that be considered prolonged use?

No: However, recurrent eye infections should make you wonder why this is happening. If you are a contact lens user, perhaps there is a problem with your lens hygiene. Also, this time of year allergic conjunctivitis is common and can simulate or bring on infection. Finally, be sure to clean your eyelashes and lids daily with a washcloth and warm water. ...Read more

Is polytrim eye drops ok for someone allergic to bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) sulfa?

Depends: If you have a well documented history of an anaphylactic reaction to Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and sulfa in the past (you could not breath and had to go to the er), it is better to choose a different eye drop as you can get a similar allergy with polytrim. In my experience, prior history of "allergy" may not be a true allergy. But tell the md who treated you to be on the same side. ...Read more
