Polymyositis (Overview)

Polymyositis is inflammation of the muscles. It is considered an autoimmune disease and which ones on inflammatory cells targeted their activity against muscle cells. This may be associated with fatigue and muscle weakness. There are several treatment options routinely use by a rheumatologists. I'm happy to do a consult if needed.

I have a tentative diagnosis of polymyositis. We just discovered mold in the ceiling above our bed. Can mold contribute to this type of illness?

Unclear: Polymyositis a disease which causes weakness in the muscles usually through inflammatory processes. Unfortunately it is unclear what triggers this process to start. Some viruses have been implicated but the majority is usually due to an autoimmune process. An autoimmune process is where your immune system starts attacking healthy cells, in this case the muscles.

Does anyone know what polymyositis is?

Yes it is autoimmune: An autoimmune inflammatory condition of muscle, treated with meds to correct this hyperimmune response to muscle. We do not know the cause.

What causes polymyositis?

What causes polymyositis?

No one knows!: Great mystery? There is genetic propensity, but it is slight. Viral theories have been put forth, without concrete support. We just don't know! If you have this, you should be followed by someone in rheumatology or neurology.

Can chemotherapy be used to treat polymyositis successfully?

Can chemotherapy be used to treat polymyositis successfully?

YES: Polymyositis is an inflammatory muscle disease that is typically treated initially with chemotherapy (usually with IV Cytoxan or cyclophosphamide). Once the disease is in remission, oral therapies are typically used in place of the IV chemotherapy. Steroids are also commonly used.

9
Where can I do to get treated for polymyositis?

Rheumatologist: See a rheumatologist or neuromuscular specialist. First to confirm that this indeed is the right diagnosis, and second, to evaluate the needs for medicines. Immunosuppressives are used to control disease activity.

10

10
Where is the best treatment for polymyositis?

Polymyositis: Polymyositis is best treated by a rheumatologist in conjunction with your primary care doctor.

11

11
Where are some of the best treatments available for polymyositis?

Local rheumatolgist: Polymyositis is an autoimmune muscle disease that left untreated can cause severe muscle weakness and atrophy of skeletal and involuntary smooth muscles. Treatment begins with cortisone and can advance to include oral immunosuppressive and newer intravenous immunosuppressive and biologic medicines all of which are availabe in the doctor's office or hospital. Physical therapy is critical.

12
Is there a cure for polymyositis?

No: Although there is no cure for polymyositis, treatment can improve muscle strength and function. The earlier treatment is started the better the outcome.

Can colustrum tablets help my RA and polymyositis?

It coud help but: Colostrum is a form of milk produced by the mammary glands of mammals (including humans) in late pregnancy. Most species will generate colostrum just prior to giving birth. Is polymyositis related with poliomyelitis?

Is polymyositis related with poliomyelitis?

No: Polymyosotis is an autoimmune disease where a person's own white blood cells are attacking their muscles causing inflammation, pain, and weakness. Poliomyelitis is the disease caused by the polio virus which attacks the nerves and can leave a person with permanent weakness due to nerve damage.
