Help! How long after being exposed to poison ivy would you start getting a rash?

2 to 10 days: The speed of a poison ivy rash depends on the thickness of the application of the oil responsible for the contact dermatitis (urushiol). Heavy applications erupt within 2 days; lighter hits take up to 10 days. If you think you have had contact, wash with soap and water asap and you may never get a rash. You can also get poison ivy up to a year after plant contact with tools, clothing, etc.

How long does it take for a poison ivy rash to develop and start itching?

Usually a day or so: The chemical in the poison ivy plant that causes the problem in many people usually takes a day or two before it fully erupts. Often, people feel something is a little different for a day or two before the itch and rash starts. Once there, it takes about 7-10 days to run its course. New blisters will appear and finally crust over. The rash is not contagious! The source is-clothes, gloves, etc.

Is it normal for a poison ivy rash to weep clear, slightly yellow fluid? What is the fluid made of? How long does the weeping stage usually last?

Is it normal for a poison ivy rash to weep clear, slightly yellow fluid? What is the fluid made of? How long does the weeping stage usually last?

Yes, that is quite: Common. The fluid, called serous fluid, is the fluid that results from inflammation of the layers of the skin. It is not an indication of infection, as patients sometimes think. This usually lasts anywhere from a few days to 2 weeks if untreated. I would recommend seeing your doctor, who may be able to prescribe a topical or oral steroid to speed up the healing process.

Had inflammation w/bad poison ivy rash. Redness/inflammation gone now, but still feels like there is fluid beneath the skin. Why? How long to go away?

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without examining you, however, you may try elevating your feet and legs at night to help in draining the fluid, if it is due to fluid under the skin. Exercise may help too. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. How can you tell the rash of poison ivy or poison oak? Are they contagious and how does it last? And how long does it itch?

Continuing exposure.: The resin from the poison ivy/oak can continue to cause you problem. Be sure to wash off anything which has touched the poison ivy with a laundry detergent to rid of the resin. Don not overlook the gloves, boots, or even your car's floor mat.

How long would a pt have to have a poison ivy rash or how severe would it have to be for the Dr to suggest Kenalog injection as treatment?

Poison Ivy is bad: Poison ivy can be treated with I.M. Kenalog, but I prefer a course of oral prednisone because it does not supress the adrenal gland as long as a Kenalog injection and can be stopped when the rash is gone.

How long does poison ivy rash and blisters stay on the skin?

How long does poison ivy rash and blisters stay on the skin?

Can take a while: Depending on how severe the reaction blisters associated with poison ivy can take several days or longer to resolve. The resin on the leaves can really set your skin on fire. Generally one should keep blisters intact but they always seem to rupture. Treating with a potent topical steroid can also help.

Mgt: The steroid effect depends on the underlying problem and extent of the inflammation. The steroids will start to be more effective after a few doses. At day 3, you should experience improvement if you are responding to the medication.

Re: severe poison ivy rash/allergic reaction of skin - How long does it usually take for a Kenalog shot to kick in and symptoms to start subsiding?

Define "kick in": You can usually expect a reduction in the intensity of itching within 24 hrs. Swelling may take a bit longer. The skin rash will take a week or two to fade whether you have the shot or not. There are products like IVYDRY or Benadryl cream that seem to help some. I avoid calamine lotion as too drying and stinky.

Is post-inflammatory hypopigmentation common after poison ivy rash? Permanent? If not, how long to go away? Any cosmetic treatment options?

Is post-inflammatory hypopigmentation common after poison ivy rash? Permanent? If not, how long to go away? Any cosmetic treatment options?

Possible: Especially if you had scratched the area heavily. I would give it at least 3 months to see if the pigment would return before doing anything about it since the chances for repigmentation is quite good.
