Normal: Platelets are responsible for stoping bleeding . If low ( trombocytopenia) spontaneous bleeding as bruises, petechie, gum bleed, blood in urine..) can occur. Severe ( > 50.000) risk for bleeding to vital organs. Mild decrease of platelets common after viral ilnesses, aspirin use. If doubt LAB test to order . ...Read more
Could you list some of the disorders that could cause a low PLT count of 10x10^9/L, whether the disorders are common or rare?
Thrombocytopenia...: ...and no. That's called a differential diagnosis, & it's way too complicated to list here. You can look it up yourself. One CAN divide it into 2 simple categories. Platelets are always being made and destroyed (dynamic equilibrium). So low platelets are due to either 1) decreased production or 2) increased destruction. As the great sage Hillel said, "all the rest is explanation; go and learn it." ...Read more
I have ET for 8 years. since I was 22. My Plt count was over 1M most of the time. In the last two months my Plt count is 500K how can it be?
By ET, I presume: you mean essential thrombocythemia, an uncommon disorder in which your body produces too many platelets. It likely results from a gene mutation. If your platelet count is usually around 1M, I would first suspect a lab error. Repeat it now. Discuss with your hematologist. ET would not be expected to spontaneously improve; some complicating or interfering condition might be occurring. Good wishes:) ...Read more

? Iron deficiency: A high platelet count may be due to iron deficiency among other causes. It is difficult to know the cause without examining you and looking at all the lab tests. It would be prudent to discuss the matter with your doctor. See this site for more info on causes. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health//dci/diseases/thrm/thrm_causes.html. ...Read more
I started taking prilorsec and now my neu are low 39 % or 1 .71 and my lym are high 51.1 % or 2.24 and low PLT of 124. And bun 16. Should I stop?
My PLT is 286 and my MPV is 13.1. The test shows normal range of MPV betwen 7.2 to 11 (fl). What is the method to normalize it and is it harmful?
Stop worrying: Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. Stop worrying about your MPV, especially if you're otherewise healthy. Forgive my frankness and best wishes. ...Read more

You may be sick: We can do nothing more with this. HOW low, what the physical findings are, what the smear looked like are all part of the picture. This may well indicate serious illness -- or it may just reflect that reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthies fall outside. ...Read more
