What do you recommend for pleuritis?

Pleuritis: Pleuritis or pleurisy is the inflammation of pleura (the lining of the lungs and the cavity they are in). Usually, viral in nature, it only requires time and sometimes anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen/naproxen to treat. Occasionally, Prednisone (steroid antiinflammatory) may be needed. Other causes may be autoimmune (in that case specific therapy is recommended) etc. ...Read more

How long does it take to recover with pleuritis?

How long does it take to recover with pleuritis?

Several weeks: Depending on the cause, the pain may disappear more slowly or more quickly. Pleurisy is usually a sign of infection of the lining of the lung between the lung and the wall of the chest. If it is a bacterial germ that is doing it, then an antibiotic will speed the improvement. If there is pneumonia (with cough and likely fever), the treatment may take longer than well. ...Read more

Can hospital tests detect something major before pleuritis gets worse?

Can hospital tests detect something major before pleuritis gets worse?

Yes, talk to the MD: It is important for the doctor to know what other symptoms (cough, fever, being short of breath, chest pain, etc.) go along with the pleuritis and whether they are getting worse or better. Special xrays and other tests can see what's wrong and whether it is getting better or worse. ...Read more

What can I use for pleuritis if I don't have a doctor?

Can excessive dry coughing or nose bowing cause pleuritis? I have no idea how I got it. How can I treat this if I don't know the causes.

No: I'm not a lung specialist. However, pleuritis is inflammation, or infection(pleurisy) of the outer covering of the lung, or space between Kung and inner chest wall. It's possible that extreme pressures could pop a lung blob, or bubble resulting in infection. Intense coughing might do that. ...Read more

Chronic chest pain x 1yr. Had pericard and pleuritis/effusions then, but continue to have chest pain Still have to sleep basically sitting up. Cause?

G'NightSweetPrincess: At your age, you need a full evaluation by a doctor (preferably a cardiologist) to evaluate the current condition of your heart. You may have a long term complication of your prior heart problems or a new development or, more likely, both. Either that, or have a new bed constructed so you can sleep upright more comfortably. I prefer the former suggestion and as soon as possible for you. ...Read more

What's the difference between pleural friction rub, pleuritic pain, pleuritis & pleural chest pain?

Very confused. Today doctors said I have pleuritis instead? How can they say that based off just symptoms? Is it fatal? Gave me no treatment.

Instead of what?: It sounds like you asked a previous question. The questions are not kept in a thread here. I am sorry, but I don't know what you are referring to. Any sort of "itis" is inflammation. It should not be fatal unless there is way more going on than that. If you are concerned that what you have could be fatal, you should let your doctor know about your concern. I do hope they can put you at ease. ...Read more

I have polyarthritis with mild pleuritis and a mild malar rash. What are these symptoms of?

Lupus: These would be classic for lupus erythematosus but some people have several diagnostic criteria for lupus and still do not have the disease. See a rheumatologist to best determine the diagnosis. Pleurisy and arthritis go together in other disease as well. Many of the possibilities are treatable. ...Read more

Hx of frequent pneumonia and asthma. 1 episode of sharp lt sided chest and shoulder pain, 7/10. Lasted only seconds, no other sx. Pleuritis?

Doubtful: Pleuritic pain usually lasts for days if not weeks. I am more concerned about the recurrent bouts of pneumonia. Do you have issues with water damage at the home? If so, exposure to molds may cause a condition known as hypersensitivity pneumonitis and avoidance is the only sure cure. ...Read more

So what specifically is happening when a heavy smoker begins to get recurring pleuritis directly caused by the cigarette smoking? No cancer or asthma

Good question: To attribute recurrent pleuritis to smoking cigarettes is perhaps problematic. I'm not an expert in recurring pleuritis but I would be looking for other possibilities. Chronic coughing might make irritation of the pleura more likely but I'm not aware of the chronic bronchitis so common in smokers being the source of pleuritis you may have heard this from someone who knows more than i or not. ...Read more

SLE pt. SED rate >140 but CRP normal. Dr says I have pleuritis but SED has never been this high. Trying to understand.?

Unusual: A normal CRP suggests that there is no significant inflammation going on. The SED rate can be elevated when there is anemia or estrogen treatment even without inflammation. In general, I prefer CRP. As for pleuritis, it is a clinical diagnosis and not diagnosed by a lab test. There may be other explanations for this discrepancy but the above is what I can think of. ...Read more

How long does pleuritis last. Also, my left lung was not opening all the way on the cat scan. Is that from pleuritis? I was not given anything for it

Depends: On the underlying cause of the inflammation. Usually few weeks. NSAID's that you are taking will help with controlling inflammation and pain. When you take deep breaths, you get pain from inflammation. Thereby, you naturally breath shallow, causing smaller opening in lungs. As the inflammation reduces, you will be able to take deeper breaths, and rectify the issue. ...Read more
