Nerve pain: The rib cage discomfort may be due to pressure on a nerve caused by a spur or disc in the midback spine. A deep breath can also pinch the intercostal nerve which runs between ribs. I recommend an evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon who will order the appropriate images. ...Read more

On meds for week and half, bronchitis and pleurisy, now getting sharp pains on right side of back and chest, what could this be?

Pneumonia: The lining of the lung is the main part of the lung that can feel pain. What you describe sounds like worsening pneumonia that has spread to the edge of the lung near the areas that hurt.
