Playing Sports With Wrist Stitches
Obtain MD clearance: The short answer is, "yes". But it depends upon the specifics of your wound severity. You should protect the wound from further injury, debris, dirt, and water, etc. The wound should be dry (biologically sealed) - not draining blood or fluid. A simple dressing and potentially an added protective wrap or pad may help as well. In the end, seek clearance from your treating healthcare provider first. ...Read more

I fell on my wrist playing sport. There was little swelling but a lot of purple/blue bruising could it still be serious?
X-ray to be sure: Unless there is an obvious deformity you may not be able to tell the difference with the naked eye. While a sprain is an injury to the ligaments of the wrist, and a fracture is damage to the bone, strains of muscles and tendons are also possible. In any case, common symptoms may be pain, limited strength/ motion, swelling, and/ or bruising. Have an x-ray to be sure! ...Read more

My boyfriend has fractured his spine before . Unexpectedly he sometimes yells in pain that his wrist hurt . He plays sports i fear it's serious .
Maybe unrelated: Depends on what part of his spine was previously fractured, and what type of fracture he had. Was it a cervical spine fracture? If not, then the wrist pain is most likely unrelated to the prior fracture. Even if it was a cervical spine fracture, it may still be unrelated. He needs to get his wrist examined by his doctor. ...Read more
Is it alright to play sports like volleyball and baseball with a nail left inside my wrist?(scaphoid fracture)my doctor says it need not be taken out.
Scaphoid fractures: can be treated with a screw that is commonly "buried' in the bone so that after it is healed and the OK is officially given ( that is VERY IMPORTANT ) one can use the wrsit and the hand normally. These screws are generally not taken out though sometimes screws can shift and fractures can settle a little but that is the exception. ANY SCAPHOID FRACTURE MUST BE OK'd by treatingDOC to resume activity ...Read more

I got 7 stitches on my index finger on my knuckle. How long do I wait to be able to play sports like basketball again which involve my index finger?
Good question : This is a very good concern that you have, considering the importance of the index finger. This type of injury that involves a very active flexing/extending digit requires a longer rehabilitation, especially resuming athletics requiring use of your hands. Please ask the surgeon who repaired it your question, as it is best for recommendations to come from him/her based on type of injury. Good luck. ...Read more

My 10 year old son just diagnosed with hand foot mouth disease. He is generally feeling fine. He still play sports with his father twice a day. Okay?
Sure, but...: Hand/foot/mouth is a viral illness usually caused by a virus called a coxsackie virus. Usually we see this in our part of the country in spring/early summer, but we too have seen some cases in our office the past few weeks. Your body will fight this off on its own, so if he's feeling ok, he can be as active as he feels ok for. He is fighting an illness, though, so insure plenty of rest and fluids. ...Read more
