Plavix Vs Eliquis
For recurrent stroke prevention, which is best: ASA vs Plavix (clopidogrel) vs ASA/Plavix (clopidogrel) vs Aggrenox? Risk of bleeding worse with any particular?
Depends: Studies have been done comparing the two. Aggrenox seems superior in preventing recurrent stroke or tia's, but Plavix (clopidogrel) has more research on heart disease and periph vasc problems. Plavix (clopidogrel) is generic now and cheaper, but doesn't work well in pts with certain genetics, and interacts adversely with some ulcer drugs. Aggrenox has aspirin, which may be a problem with some. ...Read more

↓ Blood Clotting: Plavix (clopidogrel) inhibits platelets (usually the first step in blood clotting) from becoming activated: sticking to tissue, attracting other platelets to stick & activating the 12 clotting proteins (which act in a chain reaction) to form thrombin which polymerizes & ties everything together into clots. Plavix (clopidogrel) has no affect on blood viscosity; it is an anti-coagulant; it does not thin blood viscosity. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
After 1 year on plavix (clopidogrel) and aspirin for 2 stents for LAD will a patient usuaaly discontinue the plavix (clopidogrel).(diabetic also)?
Pretty good, but...: They are essentially equivalent in thinning the blood to replace coumadin (warfarin), (warfarin) but they require twice daily dosing. Yes, you don't have to get your blood tested like you do with coumadin (warfarin), (warfarin) but if you have a bad bleed, there is no antidote for either you mentioned, like there is for coumadin (warfarin). So one must weigh the risks vs. The benefits, as we do everyday in medicine. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Very controversial: Answer depends upon how you interpret evidence. Kind of like blind men & elephant. Check out http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/medicalpubs/diseasemanagement/neurology/antiplatelet-agents/Default.htm for good summary. Bottom line, while we often add Clopidogrel to aspirin to prevent stroke, the outcome benefits are not quite there. Of note, we're not "treating" so much as "preventing" another one ...Read more

An important tool: CLopidogrel reduces the incidence of both heart attack and stroke. TI helps by reducing the 'stickiness" of platelets which are essential for clot to form. IT is one of several drugs, including aspirin, that can function in this way. Patients who have not have stents can take either of these with good results. Patients with stents usually take both aspirin and clopidogrel for at least 3-6 months ...Read more

What is the difference between plavix (clopidogrel) and rivaroxaban? Which one is a superior bloodthinner for patient with stent and atrial fibrilation?
Different drugs: Plavix (clopidogrel) is a "blood thinner" that acts on the cells called the platelets. Usually, people take Plavix (clopidogrel) after a stent.
