Mole Removal (Definition)

Mole removal involves excision of a nevus. This could involve either shaving off a raised skin lesion or cutting out a flat skin lesion. This can be done either for cosmetic reasons (unsightly mole) or to rule out skin cancer. I hope this information is helpful. Stephen weber, M.D., f.A.C.S. Lone ...Read more

Is it true that a plastic surgeon knows how to remove a mole while reducing the chances of scarring better than a dermatologist? How so?

Depends...: Many dermatologists do excellent mole removal, with the same care that a plastic surgeon would use. But some derms don't really enjoy doing surgery, and in that case, you would be better off in the hands of a plastic surgeon. ...Read more

3 protruding moles on face. Want removed. Price? Limited scarring choice? Dermatologist or plastic surgeon?

Plastic surgeon: Moles are something that both dermatologists and plastic surgeons deal with. Dermatologists are experts at diagnosing the types of moles and conditions of the skin. They typically perfrm biopsies and shave biopsies. Plastic surgeons are the experts in "sewing" or closing wounds. For cosmetic mole removal plastic surgeons will remove them in the most discrete way leaving the most favorable scar. ...Read more

I have a brown mole above my upper lip just off centre. Plastic surgeon advised against removal as will scar & my lip will shrink on one side?

I have a brown mole above my upper lip just off centre. Plastic surgeon advised against removal as will scar & my lip will shrink on one side?

Maybe: The size of the mole will make a big difference in how the surgery is done. If the mole is flat it can sometimes be removed with a laser without scarring. If it is elevated and excision would have to be done. Really good surgeons could remove it and move tissue or flap to keep the lip looking normal. The treatment with a fraxel co2 laser could get rid of most of the scarring. Expensive. ...Read more

Are dermatologists that perform facelifts also plastic surgeons? Is there a plastic surgeon degree?

Surgery vs. Surgeon: A "plastic surgery" is a surgery meant to change the appearance of the face. A (facial) plastic surgeon is a doctor who has undergone a surgical bresidency training program. I would recommend seeking a facelift surgeon who is board certified by the american board of facial plastic & reconstructive surgery (abfprs) or the american board of plastic surgery (abps). Review their work & ask questions. ...Read more

My 9 yr.-old had a mole excision by a plastic surgeon in 2012. It has grown back. Was the procedure performed incorrectly? Do we have any recourse?

Happens often: Mole removal under the age of 16 years, often results in a regrowth of the mole. Usually the regrowth is smaller or flatter than the original nevus. I do not recommend cosmetic removal of moles until 16 years or older to minimize the chance of recurrence. ...Read more

A derm checked a mole on my face and said it was fine, then three weeks later a plastic surgeon said it should be removed to be sure. Should I worry?

No: They are both right. If it is going to bother you, get it removed. Alternatively, you may watch and wait. If the mole doubles in size, becomes irregular in size, shape or color, bleeds, ulcerates or develops a nodule, see a doctor. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more

I had a vulva biopsy on a mole, something went wrong, I have elevated skin that is painful- i was told it was not a keloid scar, but may need to see a plastic surgeon- what happened to result in this?

Healing: We all heal differently, and if you had a full-thickness biopsy that was left to heal itself, it has likely scarred in. A revision - removing the scar and closing the wound with dissolving stitches - may well take care of it. ...Read more

Do all plastic surgeon remove moles?how much should it approximetly cost to have 6 small flat moles removed from my face?

They can, and so can: dermatologist, who will also do mole mapping, and keep track of all your moles too. Plastic surgeons don't tend to do that, and more interested in producing a cosmetically appealing result, with minimal scarring. So, it depends what you're after. Each surgeon charges differently, and the ballpark depends on the size of the mole, and what's needed to remove them. Just call & you'll get UR answer! ...Read more

Dermatologist referred me to plastic surgeon for suspicious scalp lesion removal. Was that for cosmetic reasons or because they suspect melanoma?

Scalp Lesion: No way for me to know that based on sketchy information; be sure to ask the surgeon for the reason for the referral and discuss in depth. If the lesion is to be removed by the surgeon, the definitive diagnosis will be made by the consulting pathologist. No reason for undo alarm until you know more facts. Remember that even melanomas, caught in early stages, are highly curable. ...Read more
