Infections are invasions of some other organism (fungus, bacteria, parasite) or viruses into places where they do not belong. For instance, we have normal gut bacteria that live within us without causing problems; however, when those penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, ...Read more

Yeast is possible: Genital itching is the most common symptom of vaginal yeast, and your question suggests you're probably taking an antibiotic which can trigger yeast infections. There are several over-the-counter yeast medications you could try; look for a product with active ingredient ending in "azole". But first check with the doctor who prescribed the antibiotic; she may want to see you in person. Good luck! ...Read more

I'm on tri-previfem. I still bought plan b after unprotected sex then we used a condom the next day I have a yeast infection with blood now. Am I preg?

Pregnant?: From what you describe pregnancy is very unlikely. The best thing to do is after you have missed a period get a home pregnancy test kit from your friendly pharmacist and check a first morning voided urine. If you do not miss a period do not bother. Get your yeast infection treated and if your discharge remains bloody see your GYN. ...Read more

On Nuva Ring, took Plan B a week and 3 days ago & period is 1 day late. Currently have yeast infection, cramps and yellow discharge, what is happening?

Doctor can evaluate: Plan B can alter the menstrual bleeding for the cycle in which Plan B was taken, and sometimes the next cycle too. One should be sure to check a home pregnancy test about 3 weeks after sex, because Plan B works most of the time, but not all the time. A primary care or Ob-Gyn doctor can evaluate to see why the other vaginal symptoms are happening, and check for infections. ...Read more

I'm on tri previfem (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol) and took plan b 3 weeks ago. I have a yeast infection w/blood. Is the blood from plan b or is it a sign of implantation? Nervous

I'm on tri previfem (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol) and took plan b 3 weeks ago. I have a yeast infection w/blood. Is the blood from plan b or is it a sign of implantation? Nervous

Confusing: If you are already on birth control pills then there is no need to take Plan B as you were already protected. Implantation bleeding only occurs if you are pregnant which is not likely since you are on birth control. Yeast does not usually cause blood. I suspect you just triggered some bleeding from adding Plan B on top of your birth control. ...Read more

Be examined: Based on your description it may be something your perineum, or bottom area is coming in contact with. Be checked to make sure it is not something else. I don't believe it is related to Plan B. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) if no allergies and cold packs may be helpful. Bathing in Aveeno may also help. ...Read more

I have what I think is a yeast infection. What's safer to take diflucan or ZPack. Worried about QT interval side effects. I do take atenolol daily.?

A yeast infection is: Commonly in women and refers to a yeast overgrowth in the vagina. If you are referring to a fungal infection in the groin, you would treat that with a topical agent like Lotrimen which would have no bearing on QT issues. Oral agents would not be indicated and ZPack is for bacteria not fungus. You need to see a health care provider for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

Is there a question?: All medicines may have side effects. Common side effects of Monistat include headache, burning/itching/pain in the vagina or urinary opening, or lower abdominal cramps. If Gyne-Lotrimin works better for you and Monistat caused problems...avoiding Monistat is a good decision. ...Read more

What are the Side effects of a yeast infection? I have burning, itchy, plus red & hot skin from where the hairs are. Not sexually active. & feverish

No fever...: A yeast infection can certainly cause burning, itching, red and hot skin. But it doesn't make you feverish. There may be some other reason you are feverish. I almost hate to mention it, but an initial herpes outbreak can give give you all the symptoms you mentioned including fever. It also has tiny skin ulcerations. Best wishes! ...Read more

Are yeast infections side effects of anything?

Often antibiotic use: Yeast infections are due to a fungus called candida which is normally found in the vagina. Non chemical: There are multiple non-pharmacological options, ranging from extreme measures (abstinence, tubal ligation) to more "light" (and however unequally effective or reliable) like condoms or time-based calculations...Usually a combination of them will provide some degree of reliable anti conception. I'm currently prescribed on Gynozole-1 due to a yeast infection. Can I use Monistat to help relieve the itchy/burning side effects during treatment?

Won't help: There is no point in adding Monistat to Gynazole. Both are "azole" drugs (miconazole and butaconazole, respectively); neither works better than the other, and neither is designed to control itching. However, once on treatment, you could safely add an over-the-counter cortisone cream. Cortisone makes yeast worse if used alone, but safe and usually effective when used with azole treatment. ...Read more

Hello. I have had swelling on one side of my vagina for three days now. I'm not too positive if its just from a yeast infection or if its more severe.

Genital swelling: Yeast infection wouldn't usually cause one sided genital symptoms. If the swelling is painful, and especially if there are open sores, herpes is likely. See a doctor ASAP -- the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis. Also, if it's herpes, treatment effectiveness depends on starting treatment right away. Good luck! ...Read more
