What causes low TSH, low T4 and low T3 (liothyronine)?

What causes low TSH, low T4 and low T3 (liothyronine)?

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have helped to know the actual values. Even though all these parameters may be low, these may yet be in the normal range. ...Read more

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (Definition)

A TSH test measures the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and tells the thyroid gland to make and release the hormones thyroxine ...Read more

Does low TSH mean I have a problem with my pituitary gland ? Hypopituitarism? My free T3 (liothyronine) and T4 are high normal???

Does low TSH mean I have a problem with my pituitary gland ? Hypopituitarism? My free T3 (liothyronine) and T4 are high normal???

Low TSH: May reflect Hypopituitary condition if FT4 and FT3 are low also. However if both are high that will indicate Hyperthyroidism. Discuss with your doctor about other modifers like acute illness or medication effects or pregnancy on your thyroid panel result ...Read more

Could a low TSH (.28) & normal T3 (liothyronine) & T4 levels mean a Pituitary issue? Or is that more typical of hypothyroidism? Would high Chloride (111) effect it?

Could a low TSH (.28) & normal T3 (liothyronine) & T4 levels mean a Pituitary issue? Or is that more typical of hypothyroidism? Would high Chloride (111) effect it?

Means pituitary is: A TSH of 0.28 with normal free T4 and free T3 (liothyronine) likely means the pituitary is working properly. A TSH of 0.1-0.4 is lower than the reference range, which means about 2.5% of normal people have a TSH or 0.1-0.4. Thus, one hopes she is normal. Her endocrinologist can follow and recheck her levels in 4-6 weeks to confirm that her levels are stable (TSH not dropping lower; T4 or T3 (liothyronine) not above normal). ...Read more

What can cause low TSH of its not a Thyroid or pituitary problem? 0.01 TSH T3 (liothyronine) and T4 free normal, graves and hasmitos negative

What can cause low TSH of its not a Thyroid or pituitary problem? 0.01 TSH T3 (liothyronine) and T4 free normal, graves and hasmitos negative

2 possibilities: Hi. First of all, Hashimoto's doesn't cause a suppressed TSH, and YES, your TSH is SUPPRESSED, not "low", because your free T4 and total T3 (liothyronine) are "normal". A low TSH (pituitary defect) would cause low free T4 and possibly/probably low T3 (liothyronine). The most likely is a "hot" thyroid nodule (autonomously hyper-functioning); second most likely would be a phase of subacute thyroiditis. Follow over time to tell. ...Read more

What could cause hyperthyroidism if it's not graves, hasmitos, pituitary problem? I have low TSH 0.01 but normal free T3 (liothyronine) and T4 and normal total t3t4

What could cause hyperthyroidism if it's not graves, hasmitos, pituitary problem? I have low TSH 0.01 but normal free T3 (liothyronine) and T4 and normal total t3t4

Already answered: Hi. I already told you: hyper-functioning ("hot") thyroid nodule is most likely, but a phase of subacute thyroiditis (ST) is certainly a possibility. Following thyroid function over time, or a 123-I thyroid scan (and uptakes) would tell the difference. This all assumes you're not surreptitiously TAKING thyroid hormone (which would look like ST, but unlike ST would have a suppressed thyroglobulin). ...Read more

Tsh 0.01, T3 (liothyronine) free 4.3, t4. Free 1.8 ? Tsh low T3 (liothyronine) very slightly elevated T4 high normal? Pcp says nothing is wrong?

It's near average: although all the numbers are running in the right direction for an activated thyroid (autonomous nodule secreting thyroid hormone is my guess). In any case, follow up repeats are a good idea for tests that show an abnormality but not a definite nor significant nor consistent one. ...Read more

Tsh 0.01, T3 (liothyronine) free 4.3, t4. Free 1.8 ? Tsh low T3 (liothyronine) very slightly elevated T4 high normal? Pcp doesn't think much, repeat in 6 weeks?

Tsh 0.01, T3 (liothyronine) free 4.3, t4. Free 1.8 ? Tsh low T3 (liothyronine) very slightly elevated T4 high normal? Pcp doesn't think much, repeat in 6 weeks?

Thyroid levels: I think I already answered your question about cause. The elevation in FT4 and FT3 is subtle, depending on the lab just barely at or above the normal range. However the low TSH makes me think it is real. Are you having symptoms (palpitations, heat intolerance, tremor, nervous)? Repeating the labs is a good idea, but I would prob not wait 6 weeks. You may need an Endocrinologist. ...Read more
