Be aware: This could be a sign of a blood clot - a so called deep vein thrombosis, although this type of swelling tends to be pitting. Nonpitting edema tends to be from lymphatic obstuction or from deposition of certain substances like you see with hypothyroidism(though this tends to be bilateral - on both sides). Could be serious.: Hemihypertrophy can mean a difference in length of the leg as well as girth of the leg. If you have suddenly noticed a difference in girth with searing calf pain and pitting edema, you need to go to the ER immediately because of the possibility of a blood clot. 1st find out cause: Before treating a condition, figure out it's cause. In case of swelling in feet/ankles, make sure your kidneys, liver & heart are ok. Ask if any medications might be causing your edema. Make sure you don't have a blood clot in your leg. Amlodipine is notorious for this. Assuming there's nothing wrong, keep your feet propped up.
