Pitting edema in one foot - Doctor answers
Causes of one sided non pitting edema right foot and ankle, no known injury, no pain? No change for 10 days. Otherwise healthy. Thanks.
Be aware: This could be a sign of a blood clot - a so called deep vein thrombosis, although this type of swelling tends to be pitting. Nonpitting edema tends to be from lymphatic obstuction or from deposition of certain substances like you see with hypothyroidism (though this tends to be bilateral - on both sides). Nonetheless, you should get this looked at by a doctor sooner rather than later. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Fluid in the tissues, either caused by something local to the swollen area like an injury or inflammation, or from the body's retention of water. Gravity brings the fluid to the feet & legs in that case. As a general rule, if one foot is swollen, something is wrong with the foot. If both feet are swollen, it's not the feet, but water ...Read more
I started getting "freckles" on my feet and legs now they are almost one solid freckle. I have pitting edema in my feet and legs?
I have hemihypertrophy on my right leg. One lump on knee two on right side of leg. Searing pain in calf plus pitting edema in ankle. Is this urgent?
Could be serious.: Hemihypertrophy can mean a difference in length of the leg as well as girth of the leg. If you have suddenly noticed a difference in girth with searing calf pain and pitting edema, you need to go to the ER immediately because of the possibility of a blood clot. I believe in playing it safe since failure to treat could have devastating consequences. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Want to clarify my question. If I press on top of 2 y.O chubby foot it leaves a small dent & rebounds in 3-5 seconds or less. Pitting edema? Worry?
I'm trying to figure out if 2 y.O son has pitting edema or not. He has chubby foot. If I press on top leaves small dent that starts to rebound right away but can take up to 5 sec. Normal or edema?
Is it a change?: Pitting edema is basically identified by the simple "pit" that is left after pressure--as seen in picture here and often takes more than 5 sec to normalize. Pitting edema in a 2 yr old is uncommon without other signs of illness. Some denting is expected with pressure on virtually every area of our body but rapid rebound is normal, slower with age. If puffy feet are his usual, likely it's normal. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Why you have edema?: In the young and healthy, feet swelling could mean a blood clot, but usually on one side. Some medications can cause leg swelling. Heart failure, protein manutrition, advanced liver and kidney diseases can do that as well, as does pregnancy etc...Trauma, excessive heat, prolonged standing can cause some swelling too. Swelling itself can cause burning sensation. Get evaluated/treated. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

25yo my calves, ankles and feet stay swollen w pitting edema. Been to ER twice and 2 docs. All tests normal. What can cause this and what can I do?
Go to primary care: With your history I would want to make sure that they did urine tests to make sure that there is no protein in your urine. A urinalysis is the initial test done in most cases. An er is often not the best place to get this evaluated and you may be better off seeing a primary care physician who will decide if you need further referrals. Would also consider getting thyroid checked. ...Read more
