My daughter was diagnosed with pinworms. How soon after taking the medication can she expect relief from itching?

Depends: The worms don't cause the itching, so response will depend on some other things you can do. The worm crawls out the anus in the night & lays eggs in the skin folds. The worm secretes a glue like material with the eggs & this glue sets up an itchy rash that triggers the itch & disburses the eggs. If you wash off the anal skin folds with cold water & apply cortisone cream this can help immediately. ...Read more

What are these white things worms in my stool? What are tests for pinworms?

What are these white things worms in my stool? What are tests for pinworms?

Your doctor can: A scotch tape test can be done for you. You set your alarm to wake up in the middle of the night (when the pinworms are usually active) and press a piece of scotch tape to your anus. The tape is then stuck to a microscope slide and the laboratory can look for pinworm eggs. A stool sample for ova and parasites is not as good a way to diagnose. Some just do presumptive tx if exposed. ...Read more

Best time to do this is late night when worms come out lay eggs. ...Read more

What could cause pinworms?

Ingesting the eggs: Pin worm eggs are found in the bedding of affected infants & toddlers, shed into their clothing from the skin around their anus where the adult worm lays them. The eggs are laid in a glue like substance that irritates the skin, so the kids are often scratching the area & dispersing the eggs. If the kid or others touch their mouth with contaminated fingers, they get a dose of eggs & start over. ...Read more
