The exact thickness of the stool is not so relevant as much as having a change in your normal bowel habits. Need an exam: If you have pencil like stools you either have very very large hemorrhoids (which would be very obvious) or something more worrisome. You should find someone to look and examine you as well as possibly perform a colonoscopy .
