I have a "pimple"on my ear cartilage and its red swollen and leaks fluid sometimes and now it has a scab. What is this? Is it a pimple?

Infection: This may be a pustule or an inflamed/infected cyst if the drainage appears to be pus. Either way, apply warm compresses and apply antibacterial ointment like bacitracin. See your physician if redness and drainage persist or worsen.

Cartilage (Definition)

Cartilage is a specialized type of tissue found in joints and areas that two bones come together. It is made up of specialized cells that live in the midst of proteins and sugars that absorb and release water similar to a sponge. I have a painful purple bump the size of a very large pimple in my ear near the cartilage. What could this possibly be?

Exactly where?: Earlobe??? Probably inflamed acne. If it drains it will feel better and heal faster + better. Sometimes an injection of triamcinolone is helpful. A dermatologist will help you. Older people can get a painful pimple out over the cartilage called chondrodermatitis nodularis helices.

I've had a small round lump in my ear cartilage for maybe a year. Never had pierced ears and it's not a pimple nor is it painful. What could it be?

Pop it: I've had these before too. I think it's an ingrown hair. Pop it and see. There is such poor circulation there that any infection/pus would more likely come out of the skin then go into circulation.

No: Please see a doctor. There is a chance it is a granuloma. This is not serious, but easily treated. There are a few other things it could be. Also, please make sure the metal stud is either sterling silver or surical steal.

Advice to ensure a ear cartilage piercing is healed properly with minimal complications?

Advice to ensure a ear cartilage piercing is healed properly with minimal complications?

Don't do it: I strongly discourage any piecing through cartilage. Although many people have gotten away with it, others have experienced severe pain during the piercing and some have gotten serious infections resulting in potentially defigurement of the ear. Cartilage heals poorly due to its poor blood supply.

What can cause a lump/swelling on the ear cartilage?

Trauma: The most common cause for lumps on the ear cartilage is trauma. A piercing or a hit to the ear can cause lumps in and around the cartilage. Under the ear skin is an unusual location for tumors, but the skin of the ear is a common site for skin cancer. Infection can also cause a lump, but most common infections are associated with pain and redness too. If the area is enlarging, seek medical care.

Why does my ear cartilage piercing have smelly liquid coming from it? I clean it often but when I squeeze it the liquid still comes out?

Infection: Foul smelling discharge from the ear suggests an infection. Keep the area clean and dry and apply Bacitracin or neosporin to the area daily. If discharge continues, see your physician to see if it is a fungal infection or a cyst.

What can cause ear cartilage to be tenderness. Is there a gland there?

What can cause ear cartilage to be tenderness. Is there a gland there?

Not really: The could be small sebaceous glands in the skin of the ear, but the cartilage does not have any of those glands. If it is tender, I would suspect a superficial infection. You need to see your physician for an exam and opinion.

I have a hard fluid filled lump on my ear cartilage, should I be concerned?

I have a hard fluid filled lump on my ear cartilage, should I be concerned?

Have ENT evaluate: There are different causes for that fluid collection, including ear trauma, perichondritis, and relapsing polychondritis. If this is a fairly recent development, having a board certified otolaryngologist (ENT) evaluate and possibly drain it may prevent future cosmetic deformities on the ear. Otherwise this collection could cause chronic inflammation eventually resulting in a cauliflower ear.

Can you use hydrogen peroxide on a 5 day old ear cartilage peircing 3 times a day? Or how many times should u clean it?

Likely is fine: This is not likely to be a problem. However, if you think there is a problem (i.e. An infection) then you probably should have this examined. Sometimes a person can develop an allergy to nickel and it can simply appear chronically irritated.
