My 2 month old baby still has black in her belly button. Looks like dark skin instead of umbilical cord residue. Is this common? When should it clear?
Not to worry: This will go away with time. It is not uncommon and with gentle cleaning using soap and water it should eventually wash away. ...Read more

Most likely okay.: A tiny bit of pink or red after the umbilical cord falls off is fine. Keep the area clean and dry. Don't bathe the baby yet (most newborns aren't rolling in the mud), and if the oozing continues more than a day or so, let your doctor know. ...Read more
There's blood around her belly button. She is 9 days old and her umbilical cord has not fallen off yet. Is this normal?
Umbilical cords: Will typically drop off within 2 weeks after birth. Bleeding from the cord can indicate that this process is about to occur, while redness/discharge/odor is never normal. Delayed cord drop used to be seen with hypothyroidism, but this rarely occurs due to early detection and intervention with newborn screens. ...Read more
My babies umbilical cord fell off today(baby is 1 Week Old). Do I put anything on it to help it heal faster?? The belly button is also outie.
Not necessarily: The umbilical stump is made to fall off — after it does there be often very little needed to facilitate it completing its healing. You can use a small drop of liquid soap (not antibacterial) to aid in the remainder drying out — but if you do nothing it will likely be just fine! If it is not healed by the 2-week visit — your provider will take care of the rest. ...Read more
Umbilical hernia: This sounds like a small umbilical hernia, which is a defect in the wall of the abdomen, which can allow your intestines to protrude. If there are no symptoms, and no great deformity, it may not be important. If there is pain, it can be very serious. Next time you see your doctor, point this out. ...Read more
11day new baby and the umbilical cord hasn't fallen off & red in the belly button when should it fall off? Or should I c her dr? No discharged or odor
Umbilical cord: A newborn's umbilical cord falls off anywhere between 1 and 3 weeks. Keeping it dry is the key for it falling off sooner. I recommend using a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean just the area where the cord attaches to the skin during diaper changers and fold the diaper top down toward the skin to keep urine from getting the cord wet. Have you pediatrician look at it at the 2-week check. ...Read more

What is a small fat containing umbilical hernia, I have been diagnosed with one, you can't see it, my belly button is still poked in!
Usually not serious: Hi james, since the hernia is small and contains only fat (from within the abdomen), it is unlikely that it will lead to incarceration or strangulation of intestines, which is the worst complication of hernias. The belly button is still in the same spot. The fat in the small hernia sac is right next to the belly button (umbilicus). If the hernia gets larger or causes pain, it should be fixed. ...Read more
Had a small umbilical hernia repair (no mesh) done a month ago. The lump above my belly button is still kind of squishy, like it was pre-surgery.
I had umbilical hernia repair march 8. It is march 28 and i still have that black bruise above belly button. It hurt. Incision is in belly button, why?
Should see surgeon: A bruise should be improving by 20 days after surgery. You should see the surgeon if you haven't seen him or her recently so they can look at it. The black/blue/purple area could be the skin of and around the belly button that had its blood supply affected by the surgery. In rare cases, the surgeon may need a second procedure to revise this. ...Read more
After the umbilical stump falls off, is the belly button opening supposed to close up? My 3 week old's fused shut. Should it be reopened?

Possibly: If the pain worsens when you exercise, and especially if you see or feel a bulge in that area, then the hernia may have recurred (come back). If so, a surgeon or other physician should see you to see if there is a hernia. The pain could also be related to scar tissue in that area. ...Read more

Untreated hernia: Possibilities if left untreated are enlarging bulge, pain, discomfort and/or pressure. I have an umbilical hernia. Last night after laying on stomach when I awoke my hernia had moved and belly button was sunk in. What should I do?
You're good: Nothing. You just reduced the protruding tissue back underneath the hernia (hole) in the muscle. It will return, especially if you do heavy work or strain/cough. If it protrudes and is hard and painful, you'll need immediate attention. The elective repair is quick, outpatient, and is done with a little sedation and local anesthesia. I recommend a surgical opinion. Good luck. ...Read more
Is it possible2have an umbilical hernia w/o a visible lump? What else can be the cause4occasional pain inside belly button? (esp when bending back)
I have pain in my left side, ribs to belly button and sometimes in my back. I do have an umbilical hernia. Could the hernia be the cause of my pain?
I had surgery 6 m ago umbilical hernia there is a hard lump in my left side off the belly button?
Scar, mesh, hernia?:
The hard lump could be scar tissue, or the hernia may have recurred (come back), or it could be mesh or the knot of a suture.
If the bulge is painful and gets larger when you strain your abdominal muscles, then the hernia may have come back (not likely, though possible).
Your surgeon or a physician can examine the lump and let you know which they think it is. ...Read more
