Why kind of information do you have to give at a physical exam?

As much as possible: The more info you provide to your doctor, the better job she'll be able to do for you. Usually, we'll ask about past medical and surgical history, family medical history, how much you smoke and/or drink, sexual history, and about medications you take. Also, you'll usually be asked about health habits (diet, exercise, sleep).

Is there a difference between a physical exam and wellness check?

NO: These are one and the same. It is reserved for the yearly visit to check wellness or lack of it and not for your laundry list of things. You shold have individual appointments for illness and medical problems. The yearly wellness or physical is to promote wellness and good health and preventative issues. It is worth the while and proper and necessary. Keep the vist to wellness issues.

I am going to my 1st physical exam. Boy age 13. What are they going to do?

I am going to my 1st physical exam. Boy age 13. What are they going to do?

It depends: Most well check exams are nothing to be worried about! Just like when you were younger, you go to the doctor, they ask questions, they check you over, and talk with you. No big deal! If you have any concerns, be sure and mention them. Bring your vaccine records so your doc can see if you need any shots. You'll be fine!

How often should a woman, age 53 who is in pretty good shape, have a physical exam?

How often should a woman, age 53 who is in pretty good shape, have a physical exam?

Depends: Depends on your individual health goals. But in general, for preventive screening, every two years is probably sufficient if you have no medical conditions. This is primarily driven by the USPSTF recommendation that you have a mammogram every 2 years between the ages of 50 and 75. Other things to have checked would be blood pressure, cervical cancer screening (every 3-5 years) and Colon cancer.

As a pretty healthy and active 35 year old male, how often should I have a comprehensive physical exam?

As a pretty healthy and active 35 year old male, how often should I have a comprehensive physical exam?

No definite answer: You ask a great question. There actually is no research to guide us on this question - only opinions. Mine is that every year or so makes sense, mostly to stay up-to-date on new developments in cancer screening, healthy lifestyle behaviors, and recommended vaccinations. All of these are updated on a continual basis. A good resource is an iphone app called my health checklist (2012 version coming).

I have never had male physical exam, should I get one at my age of 20 or not worry about it? And does insurance cover it if I get one just to do it?

Physical? Good idea: A physical is a good idea at any age. At 20 it will be directed by your family history (diseases at earlier ages than normal), and behaviors that may affect your health (smoking and sexual behavior.) blood work, and other tests will be determined by these factors. With regards to coverage, more and more companies are seeing the value of these exams, but it would be wise to check with them.
