I have had a cough for 5 days, including phlegm. Today I coughed up phlegm with a lot of blood and my breathing is easier. No blood since. Am I okay?

Likely ok: Usually a small amount of blood after several days of cough is caused by some mucosal damage due to infection and/or the physical trauma of a heavy cough. However, I ask all my patients to notify me immediately if blood occurs with cough because it can be a sign of something more sinister in uncommon cases. ...Read more

I have had a cough for three weeks after moving to Seattle from NY. No allergy history, good amt of phlegm and rash cough. No metallic taste?

Persistent coughing: Hi Marilyn,
Since your cough has persisted for more than two weeks, it needs to be evaluated. A physician should listen to your lungs with a stethescope and examine your ears and throat. A lung or bronchial infection, new onset asthma or sinus drainage are just three possible causes for a persistent cough. ...Read more

2 months since my cold resolved, but I still keep producing faint yellow clear phlegm (no fever/cough)can feel it at the back of my throat constantly.

Coincidence?: Perhaps you did have a cold. It is also possible, especially this time of year to suffer from allergies, and while coincidental to one another it may explain the chronic post nasal drip and symptom you describe. Try a Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and see if this reduces the problem (a long used antihistamine). ...Read more

Many possibilities: Your child should have a test for cystic fibrosis. If that is negative, then I recommend he be tested for an immune deficit with quantitative immunoglobulins and IgG subsets as well as IgE level. Has he had a test for tuberculosis? Is he exposed to anyone who smokes? Is he exposed to interior fumes of any type? Consider scheduling a visit with one of our providers for an in depth assessment. ...Read more

If it comes and goes, you need to tell your doctor and perhaps see an allergist. If it is mor erecent, use a saline nasal spray to alleviate your nasal symptoms, it will improve your post nasal drip. ...Read more

My 8 month old baby boy is having a lot of phlegm and is coughing today.?

Cold symptoms?: The key is the history. Are there nasal symptoms which would lead one to think that the baby has an upper respiratory illness? Any fever? Is the cough effective in that the mucus clears easily or not. If it clears the airway then I am less concerned. If not then a bronchodilator may be helpful, especially if this has happened before. Eight months is too young for this to be spring allergies. ...Read more

Cough: I am less concerned about the tiny amount of blood than the "violent cough" in a 2 month old. If it was just a single incident then ok, but if she is coughing that aggressively regularly she needs to be evaluated. ...Read more

Symptomatic care: Most colds go away on their own and do not need medications, even with phlegm. Fluids, rest, tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain can all be helpful. Sometimes antihistamines like zyrtec can make getting secretions loose harder. Some folks feel vitamin c helps, and it likely will not hurt, but no great studies exist. Zinc lozenges may have a role.
