When is heart disease supposed to cause poor cerebral perfusion?

When is heart disease supposed to cause poor cerebral perfusion?

Cerebral perfusion: Nothing is 'supposed' to cause poor cerebral perfusion. When cardiac function becomes poor enough to decrease cardiac output and or blood pressure enough to perfuse the brain adequately, then the patient is in serious trouble. This usually happens only with severe cardiac dysfunction and often has associated cerebral vascular disease. ...Read more

I suffered of anxiety during a brain MRI evaluation , and it can not be completed. What others procedures (b.Map, CT scan) are useful for the brain?

Options: It is not uncommon for patients undergoing MRI scans to feel claustrophobic and have to end the test prematurely. If the information needed is important to make a diagnosis or determine treatment, you can try having the procedure with an open mri. Alternatively, if your doctor needs the clarity of the regular MRI images, you may benefit from mild anti-anxiety medications taken before the scan. ...Read more

How do u get a full evaluation of the brain, heart, blood? I'm getting very lightheaded & has had mri&ct 6mths ago normal. & had a full blood work up!

Hmmm...: Well, i doubt we'll be able to do this in 400 characters, but the lightheadedness is often broken down into several categories. If it's fainting or near-fainting spells, that's called syncope or near-syncope and we usually check with a cardiologist about that. If it's like the sensation you get when you stand up too fast, it may be low blood pressure, especially if you're on meds. ...Read more

Does a whole body pet scan show the brain?

Does a whole body pet scan show the brain?

If it is included: The drug given goes everywhere in the body, including the brain. How much of the body that is imaged depends on the disease being looked for. For lymphoma, scans start at the base of the brain and end at the upper thighs. For head and neck cancer, the scan is from the top of the head to the upper thighs. Melanoma includes the whole body, and seizures is just of the brain. ...Read more

What is a pet/ct fdg 18 test on the brain?

What is a pet/ct fdg 18 test on the brain?

Imaging metabolism: PET/CT of brain involves injection of isotope FDG18 intravenously and after waiting about forty five minutes imaging the brain with camera acquiring information about metabolism of brain. The isotope accumulates according to metabolic activity of brain. Can be used to detect tumors, in epilepsy for seizures, and some metabolic disorders. In general malignant processes are most active. ...Read more

Does the brain also appear when doctors conduct a whole body pet scan?

Does the brain also appear when doctors conduct a whole body pet scan?

Yes: When a whole body pet-ct scan is ordered, it usually includes from the top of the head through the mid-thigh. That being said, the brain is very metabolically active and appears very "hot" on pet, so it is not very sensitive for detecting metastatic disease in the brain. Often, depending on the type of cancer and other factors, the screening may also include a brain mri. ...Read more

A recent pets can revealed that an 82 year old has significant brain loss and the brain is about 29% functioning. Is that normal for that age?

A recent pets can revealed that an 82 year old has significant brain loss and the brain is about 29% functioning. Is that normal for that age?

No: Assuming regular exercise & proper nutrition (as well as a bit of good luck), there's no reason one has to lose brain function as we age, certainly not over 2/3 by 82yo. Moreover, a pet scan is pretty advanced in assessing brain function at that age unless you're looking for signs of alzheimer's disease. More important than scan image is clinical function. How is this 82yo doing day-to-day? ...Read more

Is there a way to check dopamine levels in the brain? Would a pet scan be of any benefit?

Is there a way to check dopamine levels in the brain? Would a pet scan be of any benefit?

PET scan: Pet scans in hospitals use glucose metabolism to measure body function. The majority of pet scans are done to look for cancer growth and recurrence there are markers for Dopamine but these are still largely in preclinical or experimental design stages. Besides, parkinson's disease, work is underway to enable pet scans to diagnose alzheimer's disease as well. Excellent question. ...Read more

What does the pet/ct scan of the brain tell you?

What does the pet/ct scan of the brain tell you?

Looking for what?: It depends on what is being looked for. Pet/ct looks at the metabolism. Or the function of the area scanned (brain in this case), using different radioactive drugs, or tracers. The most common is f-18 fdg, an analog of glucose, which images glucose consumption. Other radiotracers look at protein synthesis or for evidence of the plaques that are associated with alzheimer's. ...Read more

Can a PET or functional MRI see level of dopamine in the brain?

Not exact levels: But dopamine transporter imaging with Single -Photon Emission Computed Tomography(DaT-SPECT) is semiquantitative(not exact levels but ranges) and more of a functional form of imaging(to see where there is dopaminergic activity or the lack thereof). Unfortunately, its not readily available and is more so used research wise. ...Read more

Brain pet scan no metabolic activity means no cancer of brain or no cancer anywhere in my body? Does this also mean no inflammation, hypometabolism?

Unclear: Pet scans of the brain can miss tumors, so a negative one doesn't necessarily mean you are in the clear. A study limited to the brain would not rule out other problems elsewhere. ...Read more
