You will need a medical history, a physical examination to include auscultation of your lungs and you might need a chest xray as well. It is common to have congestion and cough when recovering from an upper respiratory infection, the majority of which are caused by viruses. not bacteria. If it's in the first 2 days of the illness, try to get in to doc as there is an anti-flu medication that can be given as long as you do it early. If it's been longer, then fluids, rest. Viral syndrome: This is likely a upper respiratory viral infection in evolution. Sore throat (pharyngitis) with fever, followed by cough and other flu like symptoms. Best treatment is rest, plenty of fluids, tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen for aches and fever. A decongestant and cough suppressant may be helpful when these symptoms arise.
