Can anyone tell me about what to expect when I go to do my heart stress test and if there are any side effects of dipyridamole?

Yes, there is.: Your physician should tell you or give you some literature on the test, what to expect, what it tests. Dipyridamole is a medication that helps prevent thrombus formation or clot in the vessels, and may be used during stress testing (rare side effects). Stress testing usually is being hooked up to monitor, walking on treadmill while being monitored and instructed. Nuclear stress is with injection. ...Read more

What is the difference between persantine and dobutamine?

Drugs for Heart Test: Chemical stress tests are used to diagnose heart artery blockage in people who cannot treadmill exercise. Persantine is injected IV and dilates normal blood vessels more than abnormal ones causing an ischemic defect on a nuclear image. Dobutamine is injected IV and increases the heart rate and contractility with muscle fed by a blocked artery not responding as well as normal muscle. ...Read more

After taking the Persantine thallium test my dr., informed me of the following; Decreased count rate in the anterior wall; reversible ischemia;; ?

After taking the Persantine thallium test my dr., informed me of the following; Decreased count rate in the anterior wall; reversible ischemia;; ?

Cannot be sure it is: While decreased count in the anterior wall may be caused by ischemia( inadequate blood flow), there are frequently other causes. In females, decreased anterior wall counts may be an artifact due to the interposition of the breast between the camera and the heart. In true ischemia ,decreased count would be present only in the stress images. Please confirm this with your physician. ...Read more

See below.: This is a chemical stress test of blood flow to the heart muscle. It is used to evaluate patients who are unable to exercise. Pictures of blood flow are obtained before and after the stress. Post stress abnormalities may indicate narrowings of the coronary arteries which impede blood flow and may be a cause of chest pain. Abnormalities of flow before stress may indicate previous damage. ...Read more

NO!!!!: Caffeine should not be ingested prior to pharmacologic cardiac stress since it can interfere with the results. Stopping caffeine ingestion for at least 24 hours prior to pharmacologic stress should be sufficient. If caffeine is ingested and pharmacologic stress is performed, this can cause false negative results. If you have taken caffeine, stress may be rescheduled or switched to dobutamine. ...Read more
