Acne (Definition)

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions. It affects about 80% of adolescents. Acne starts as a blockage of the sebaceous glands followed by inflammation. There are numerous treatments available, both topical and systemic. The most commonly used are benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, and antibiotics ...Read more

If I use hydrogen peroxide on my face to help get rid of zits will it help?

If I use hydrogen peroxide on my face to help get rid of zits will it help?

No: Topical benzoyl peroxide, which you can get over the counter, is your first try. If insufficient, a woman who can take the oral contraceptive pill may find this clears her. Otherwise, your physician might add topical Clindamycin and if you are not clear in four weeks, a systemic antibiotic that's right for you. All acne can be managed nowadays. Good luck and stay proactive. ...Read more

Acne isn't itchy: I suspect the itch is related to medication. Acne itself is generally not itchy. Popping pimples likely won't help you feel better, and will often impair healing. Sounds like maybe your anxiety is the main issue here. Skin picking is common in anxiety disorders, and will complicate acne. Talk to your doctor about different acne medicine and improving anxiety. ...Read more

Should I pop my zits?

Should I pop my zits?

No: No, definitely not. Though popping a pimple may make it less noticeable temporarily, you can cause it to stay around longer. By squeezing pimples, you can actually push bacteria further into the skin, increasing the swelling and redness. In fact, more damage can be done to the skin by picking and squeezing than by the acne process itself. Picking and squeezing almost always leads to scarring. ...Read more

Which foods cause zits?

Which foods cause zits?

Foods causing acne: The conventional answer is that diet does not contribute to acne. I was taught this but in real life practice I have way too many patients who say that certain foods cause them to breakout. I think there are certain foods that set certain people off, but it is very individual. You have to study yourself and see if you have any patterns, and avoid the foods that set you off. ...Read more

I would like zit gone by tomorrow!?

Unlikely: This is possible but highly unlikely. There are many quick fixes for acne. One includes going into your doctor for an injection into your pimple of a very dilute medium potency steroid. There is no guarantee it will go away in a day but it will speed up the inflammatory process. Using products is recommended and maintenance treatment is necessary to avoid future outbreaks. ...Read more
