In your experience, just how often does an adult get a periodontal abscess? The one i had just resulted in extraction. I see the dentist regularly.
Infrequently: Fortunately, not very often! a localized periodontal abscess is usually a result of a specific problem - it may be trauma, a cracked tooth, a lesion of some type, or a foreign body impaction. These are infrequent. If you have been diagnosed with chronic moderate or severe periodontitis and have significant generalized bone loss, you will likely experience more frequent abscesses. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

I do not get it how an antibiotic cannot destroy a periodontal abscess and dry it up. That is what it is made for, right dentist?
I don't have enough money to pay for oral surgery but have had periodontal abscess since april 8th. On 2 different antibiotics for 5 days w/out relief?
Perio: I am sorry for your financial situation but unfortunately the pain and infection will not truly go away until the source is removed. Whether extraction, osseous surgery, etc, the source of the infection needs to be treated. Abx only limits dose for a while, but it will come back, even worse some times. Find a cheaper option like a dental school. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Is it unusual to be prescribed antibiotics for as long as 14 days after a large dental fistula--periodontal abscess--is diagnosed around two teeth?
What is involved in draining a gum (periodontal) abscess to rid infection. Is it highly successful without the need for tooth extraction?
Maybe: The abscess formed because an infection inside the tooth drained out into the jaw and then through the gum. You must get rid of the original infection before you can get rid of the abscess. A properly done root canal or a tooth extraction are the only two ways to accomplish this. If advanced gum disease is also present then the tooth usually must be removed. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Have periodontal abscess in roof of mouth and bone how can I relieve pressure and pain while on 2 antibiotics?
Always!: A dental access that has spread to the cheek is an indication of a severe infection and requires immediate attention. If you can not get to an oral surgeon then go to the emergency room. This type of infection can spread to the eye and the brian and if left untreated can be fatal. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Antibiotic choices: When treating an abscess -one has to consider 'what' germs might be there, then make the appropriate selection for therapy. Sometimes it's more than just antibiotics (such as incision). One has to consider patient allergies, drug interactions, dosing/length of therapy etc. It's nice to have a culture of the abscess material, but sometimes a best guess will do. I like trimethoprim-sulfa. See MD. ...Read more
