Herpangina is often caused by the hand-foot-mouth virus (coxsackie virus) & can cause a lot of pain from sores at the back of the throat usually have a high-fever with this. Gingivostomatitis is most often caused by herpes type 1 virus, and these sores are more often around the lips and oral mucosa closer to your mouth. Strep is a possibility as well. ...Read more

Virus? Herpes?: If new in past few days, probably a virus, expecially herpes if maybe exposed (kissing, performing oral sex). Other viruses also can do this, and some non-infectious diseases. Get care ASAP, including ER or urgent care if necessary (don't wait til Monday). If herpes, the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. More commonly viral: Viral infections are much more common and likely causing your symptom complex, but it is difficult to tell for sure. If your throat is red, with pus, and swollen, you should have it checked for possible strepthroat. Otherwise, viral is likely and symptoms will get better in a few days. Not definite: Your presentation sounds more like bacterial, however either can produce pus on tonsils and the symptoms described. Would get seen by your dr or an urgent care and have a rapid strep test done to be sure if you need an antibiotic. ...Read more
