Depend how often: If you have only had one episode then that is no reason to have your tonsils out. Typically this is what i'm thinking about taking out tonsils for infection we use the following: seven infections in one year or four infections a year for two years or three infections a year for three years. Virus? Herpes?: If new in past few days, probably a virus, expecially herpes if maybe exposed (kissing, performing oral sex). Other viruses also can do this, and some non-infectious diseases. More commonly viral: Viral infections are much more common and likely causing your symptom complex, but it is difficult to tell for sure. If your throat is red, with pus, and swollen, you should have it checked for possible strepthroat. Otherwise, viral is likely and symptoms will get better in a few days.
