Evaluation ASAP: You need to be evaluated by an infertility specialist. The most common reason for periods 2 times per year is pcos. And if you have reason to believe you don't have pcos, you need to first and foremost make sure you don't have something more serious like the beginning of early menopause. Sounds crazy but I see that commonly missed in women age 15-25. Read more

Yes: It is slightly easier to insert an IUD when you are either menstruating or ovulating. It is also very important to the physician that you are not pregnant at the time of insertion, which is why we like to do it when you're on your period. However, it is possible to insert it any time of your cycle. Read more

Eventually: If irregularity is your common pattern there are some that go up to 60 days or more. They are often triggered by lack of consistent timing on egg release or no release at all. After 60 days an OBGYN may want to trigger a menses with meds since womb tissue is ready and the cycle will be heavy & long. They could also explain what they can do to push your cycles into a predictable pattern. Read more

See your ob doctor: Your cycles are confusing. It is difficult to know when you can get pregnant. It is actually possible to get pregnant during your period, although not often. Your OB can examine you and get you started on a better understanding of your body and whether you have polyovarian cyst syndrome or endometriosis or if there is a cause of your irregular periods. Be well and get checked. Read more

I'm sexually active and I had my period on then off the same day. I keep track of my period and I have irregular periods. What should I do?

Cycle control: Hello,

It is awesome that you track your periods. It is also worrisome that you had a short period perhaps unlike what you usually experience. For contraception, since you are sexually active and for cycle control I would recommend starting a contraceptive method. There are many to choose from that will make your periods more predictable and your sex life spontaneous and without worry. Read more

I've been off the Depo-Provera for 8 months, I had irregular periods before that, I got my period last october and I get it every 2 weeks...Whats wrong?

Depo and bleeding: Women who were irregular in their cycles before depoprovera are more likely to have irregular cycles afterwards - or even a span of "post-depo-amenorrhea, " i.e. No periods for a while. This obviously didn't happen to you, but you may be having anovulatory bleeding, i.e., vaginal bleeding not linked to normal ovulation. See your doctor if this doesn't straighten out. Read more

Not needed: If your periods are 56 days apart then you are not ovulating or at least not ovulating consistently. An ovulation test is not going to be helpful since we know by your history ovulation is an issue. If you are wanting to get pregnant go ahead and see a doctor to discuss ovulation medication like clomid (clomiphene). Read more
