Immodium seems to help with chronic diarrhea after surgery. However, it appears to cause severe bloating. Would pepto bismal help with bloating?
Assess your diet: Imodium (loperamide) is a motility modifier. It takes the number of squeeze messages in the gut & slows them down, so things are pushed along slower. If you are bloating, it is likely this effects how the gas your digestion makes moves along in the same way. You need to reduce gas producing foods in your diet (like cauliflower, beans) & take a probiotic to alter your gas production. Pepto may have a placebo effect ...Read more

I left my pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) chewable tablets in the car for about 2 hours today. It was 75 degrees out. Are they still okay to take?
NO: Pepto-bismol's active ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate; this is a chemical combination of bismuth metal & subsalicylate. Heating pepto-bismol separates the metallic portion of the salicycyate & then you absorb too much of the metal which can be toxic. If temperature is 75 outside inside the car can reach over 100. So do not use those pills. Generally never leave any medications inside a car i. ...Read more

May I take a pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) tablets an hour after I had taken Garlic Echinacea? I have some nausea.
Stop self-treating!: Nausea may be GI-related (food poisoning, peptic disease, gastroparesis, due to biliary & pancreatic disease, gas/bloat syndrome, small bowel problems). Consider "central" causes: motion sickness, vertigo, migraine headache, brain problems (some very serious). Also, rule out infection (? urinary tract), medication side effects, pregnancy, & even reaction to stress. Find & treat the cause--see doc. ...Read more

Nausea started on sunday then dry heaves for about 4 hours. Thought is might be an intestinal virus. What's going on? I have chewd pepto tablets, eaten soda crackers, drank 7-up, hot tea and had soup. I have keept everything down. My stomach hurts I
Hello. I can't diagnose your condition. But it could be a viral gastroenteritis.
Water is very important, even if you can only tolerate sipping it slowly. Stay away from acidic beverages (like tomato or orange juice) and caffiene (like cola or coffee). Clear beverages may be helpful for 12 to 24 hours. Try eating a small amount of crystalized ginger. Or make a ginger tea. Slice fresh ginger and place in a tea pot. Pour boiling water over it and allow it to steep for at least five minutes or longer. You can lightly sweeten with honey if desired. This is a chinese remedy that has been used for hundreds of years.
When you add in solids, avoid things like meats, dairy products and fibrous vegetables as well as spicy or highly fatty foods. Your pain may be from dry heaves. You have not mentioned bowel movements. Hopefully, you are having them. If this does not remit in the next few days, recommend that you speak with your doctor. Should you develop severe abdominal pain, you needs to be seen more urgently. I hope you feel better soon. Take care. ...Read more
Hello Doctor. How are you? I have a few pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) tablets that expired one year ago. I have a really bad stomach ache. Is it safe to take a pill?
Would use new: Generally good policy not to take expired medications, and I would get fresh antacids, or even try household baking soda if you feel this is from stomach acid. If recurrent, see MD. Ulcers (? aspirin/motrin), infection (e.g. H pylori), gall stones, etc may need to be considered. Seek MD esp if red flags eg increasing nausea/vomit, blood/melena (black stools), anemia, weight loss, fever ...Read more
